Can I get a static IP?

Hello

I receive my broadband connection from AOL. I would like to configure a static IP address and have been trying to do this so far by using the Port Forward guide.

However, I cannot get my connection to work once I have configured my network connection settings. I suspected, as the guide suggests, that this is because the DNS server numbers which I enter are not correct.

So I called AOL today and after over an hour of verious advisers arguing that they could not provide me with DNS server numbers, I gave up.

So how can I go about obtaining DNS server numbers in order to assign a static IP address?
Is the Port Forward guide correct in it's approach of how to do it?
Do AOL really provide DNS server numbers?
Is http://www.no-ip.com/ worth pursuing?

Any assistance would be much appreciated. Many thanks.

hold on, what has them giving you their dns addresses got to do with whether they can assign you a static IP ?

absolutley nothing.

you are talking about port forwarding, so lets get something straight. are you saying you want a static local IP, or a static public IP ?

i was of the understanding that i needed the dns server details in order to configure a static ip address in windows 'network connections'.

start/settings/network connections/connection properties/internet protocol (tcp/ip) properties/general.

am i right?

i believe it is a local static ip that i require.

what did you think of the Port Forward guide on my link?

Are you using a router or connecting stright into your ADSL modem? If the latter how is it connecting, by USB or by CAT 5e?

If your using a router then you have to configure internal IP addresses yourself, its nothing to do with your ISP. If you want an external static IP then ring them up and ask for that, they will then give you all the relevant information.

DNS stands for Dynamic Naming Service and resolves the name of a site against an IP address. I can see why you've asked for it from AOL but if you are on internal network then you would want to set your routers IP as the DNS server anyway and that will then forward you onto the AOL DNS servers.

what are you trying to forward the port for? to me it sounds like you dont need a static IP from your ISP, you just need a static IP for your PC on your network, and this is simply setup within the router, you dont need to mess with DNS at all

are you talking about a static IP on your internal network?

Thats all you need for port forwarding

If so then stick the DNS server as the IP addy of your router

go to run and type in cmd

then type in ipconfig /all

the default gateway is the IP addy of the router, set the default gateway to that, set the DNS server to that.

Set your IP addy to the same addy as the router but change the last of the 4 numbers to 10 or something like that (anything but 1)

i did exactly as you prescribed but i was unable to get an internet connection with those settings

i am using a netgear dg834 modem/router to connect to the internet.

would anyone be so kind as to tell me how i can use this to setup a local static ip address?

don't need to make any changes to the router settings, just leave it on dhcp and setup a static ip in your NIC tcp/ip settings.

if dhcp is the default then i would assume that it is set to dhcp.

is 'NIC' Network Internet Connections? if so, then this is where i have already been trying to configure the tcp/ip settings.

am i on the right lines here so far?
