View Full Version : The Dangers of Lower Guage Cable + Larger Fuse - Pic
thejoose 29-11-2004, 09:23 AM This happened on friday morning, just before a road trip to London!!! Typical
http://www.talkaudio.co.uk/exchange/data/6/8000Fuse.jpg
Now this is what i think happened - Im using 4 guage cable but have got 3 Amps + 1 AC 2xs and 1 AC Epicenter in the back. the fuse in the holder was a 120amp fuse (which isnt blown, Me thinks the system was cranked, the voltage dropped (i had headlights rear demister heater on)and was drawing alot of current, the cable holder on the fuse has gotten very hot and melted the fuse casing.
do you agree? Im gonna rewire with 0 guage this week just wanna make sure its not going to happen again. I am 99% sure its not a short any where (the amps are individually fused and those fuses are ok)
Any ideas?
Mr_Bob 29-11-2004, 09:36 AM 120A fuse should still blow before the wire melts... that's not excessive for 4 gauge...
my guess is the connection was poor and it was arcing...
got a bigger pic (probabyl best to link it)
Migroo 29-11-2004, 10:21 AM My money is on a poor connection - you need to make sure the cable is really solidly connected :)
Madmax 29-11-2004, 10:23 AM poor connection causing excessive resistance and creating the heat, Bass Mekanik did the same

I dont have a bigger picture online, sorry but have one if someone can host....
black-cat 29-11-2004, 10:41 AM Naff fuseholder, 120A is fine with 4 guage.
DEVICES 29-11-2004, 10:45 AM jchallis at clara co uk for a bigger picture and I'll host it.
^Adam^ 29-11-2004, 10:48 AM 120amps is fine for 4awg? even over 5metres?
cool, not sure I really need to upgrade to 2awg at the moment then :)

Its a phoenix gold agu holder - ring connectors each end. and come to think of it it has been loose recently. looks like ill hold of the upgrade to 0 gague

Nuff said!
jamiebae 29-11-2004, 11:05 AM That looks thinner than 4awg to me...
Hey, look at it this way, Garyhas melted three Distribution block :wow:
DEVICES 29-11-2004, 11:09 AM its either a f*cking big fuse holder, or 8 guage in my eyes.
But then again, you cant always tell from a picture.

I'm with the depraved pervert on this one!
Phil Collins 29-11-2004, 11:12 AM That's 8awg. Or at least, that's what it looks like....
thejoose 29-11-2004, 11:35 AM damn it
It bloody well is 8awg..........im just a prize tard
0 guage wiring kit for £49.99 me thinks
jamiebae 29-11-2004, 11:41 AM Fcuk me! I'd be worried about drawing 60a through 8awg cable, let alone 120a!
I think this thread should be FAQ'd as a warning to others :shake:

Im running the amps stated below (the US AMPs is running at 1ohm so mondo current) I have had a constant niggling in my head that the cable was only 8awg but for some reason thought it was 4. looks like i got of lightly.
0 Guage here we come
Madmax 29-11-2004, 12:23 PM what is the power output of the US Amps 150?
**** me!!!
No wonder you have problems with clipping etc. The voltage you were probably running at means you would be down around the 12v mark if not lower at full pelt and so the amps output would be reduced by quite a bit
Upgrade to 0 gauge with the CAD value kit (bargain at £50 for everything you will need)

I have learnt from the clipping incident and havnt been running it full pelt as i havnt had it scoped yet. Voltage drop on the other had is the main issue at the moment so the 0 guage is going in.
You know you think you learn something from one mistake but it finds anotehr way to come and spank you on the ass.
Madmax 29-11-2004, 12:35 PM its always a steep learning curve.
Make sure you upgrade the battery earth to 0 gauge aswell
whats the power output of the US Amps amp?
LOL
that amp is a USA150 Oldskool. This similar to a USA 600 in modern terms.
With it being run at half rated impedance (1 ohm bridged........) ouch - thats well over 100 amps draw - probably will push near to 750 watts there, but effeciency will be cack as it will be pushing current not volts!
i bet you were hitting about 9.5 volts or summat daft.
Madmax 29-11-2004, 01:41 PM which would be part of the reason why you had soo much clip before.
Mike@CAD 29-11-2004, 01:55 PM I love this thread.... this sort of thing is more common than you think.
I hope lots of peole read it and take notice!
Mike
thejoose 29-11-2004, 01:56 PM which would be part of the reason why you had soo much clip before.
The clip that killed the RE Comps was due to incorrect settings of all my crossovers and stuff. The USAMPS has only been wired to 1ohm for about a week.
Im gonna post a new thread on my next big question but the big three, Thats 0 guage wiring to the amps, 0 guage wiring from the battery to the body and 0 guage cable from the alt to the battery right???
Madmax 29-11-2004, 01:57 PM and from the alt to the chassis or engine to the chassis :)
Blade 29-11-2004, 02:00 PM What did you setup wrongly to kill your RE components?
