View Full Version : jl xr components
bassadikt 28-02-2004, 11:15 PM what do people think of these comps?
i currently have a jl 300/4 and id like to bridge the cannels of that into the tweets and a 300/2 for the mids.
can these components take that ammount of power? as they only state 70wrms but ive heard of people feeding them much more.
i want to give whichever comps i get plent of jusice cz ill be feeding a h2 15 with 2k+wrms in a ported enclosure so they will need plenty of volume to keep up. but i also want incredible quality and the jls look to have that.
if the midbass cant keep up i was thinking of 2 8inch w3v2 subs to be powered with 600wrms so the midbass isnt drowned out and run the xrs say above 250hz?
what do u guys think?
bassadikt 29-02-2004, 09:37 PM anybody? surely someone has heard / used these components?
any opinion on them would be benificial as i have to decide between these or the alphasonik components which look good too. i am buying very soon as my left mid blew the other day :( on my 'average' lanzar comps
i have the XR 3 ways in my car.
they dont need a lot of power. even off the HU there is enough volume.
i have mine running @ 100rms per side and i think one of the mids may have blown :( there less than 2 months old :( not 100% sure on this though as i only get the sound that makes me thinks its blown the odd time???
but yes they are great components good bit of mid bass and overall very nice sounding.
Rich-UK 29-02-2004, 11:45 PM I really like mine. They really annoyed me at first and I thought I'd made a mistake buying them, but after a bit of messing arround with tweeter positions and crossover settings, they sound very good :)
Midbass is good, but not excellent, the 3-ways are much better though. They will handle 70watts fine, and should be OK for a bit more, but how often will you be playing them at full volume anyway?
Blade 01-03-2004, 01:21 PM Definitely a nice sounding set... Impressive midbass, which was suprising, but lots of upper-range detail and clarity :)
Harry Bo 01-03-2004, 02:07 PM I'm a big fan of the XRs, immensely detailed components with excellent crossovers and so on. I suppose some people might see them as a bit too clinical but they really are a superb set IMO :)

mulletboy2 01-03-2004, 02:15 PM Bare in mind Rich, that he's talking of the 2 ways, so they're probably different drivers to my 3-ways.
Buff - sure you didn't blow them by throwing bucket loads of clip at them? :(
I fed mine off 400W or so and they loved it.. however, I don't listen loud. It never hurts to have too much overhead available, providing it's overhead and not thrown at the speakers consistently. The 300/4 will be fine on the mids with the 300/2 on the tweets, or vice versa, providing you're sensible with gains (a good rule of thumb in audio anyway ;) )
As for 8W3v2's for midbass.... depends how high you want them to play, but I didn't like the sound of mine above 100Hz, that could have beent he box though. What about GFS' IDQ midbass in the classifieds, or some loverly Morel WR6's or WR8's? ;)
bassadikt 01-03-2004, 11:17 PM ok thanks for the info.
how do the 3 ways differ in terms of sq spl and power hanlding than the 2 ways?
are they worth the extra money?
ill check out those midbass drivers Mullet thanks.
bassadikt 01-03-2004, 11:36 PM those morel 8 inch look v good, what box was your 8w3v2 in? i plant to have mine in small sealed enclosures.
i want to set the h2 to play below 55hz and the midbass units to play 55hz upto 100hz or 120hz then the comps above 100hz / 120hz.
this sound decent? or should i change the c/o settings?
Wilma 01-03-2004, 11:56 PM i run the XR 2 ways 6"
all good.
mulletboy2 02-03-2004, 09:22 AM I'm not as keen on the 2 ways as the 3 ways, but the power handling and SQ seem to be about on par with the 3 ways. Obviously with a dedicated midbass driver you get better midbass from the 3 ways (which is what you're looking for!), but other than that I'd say it really comes down to your application.
I could fit the tweet and midrange (4") drivers in my kicks, but I couldn't fit a 6 1/2 inch speaker down there, so my install benefited from a 3 way setup.. otherwise I would have ended up with all frequencies below 3k (or wherever JL cross them over) firing across infront of my knees.
Figure out what room you have and make your decision based on that. If you have space for the 3 ways to be installed well, do it.. but it's my opinion that if you can get 6's and tweets in the kicks, you may be better off doing that, then adding a seperate midbass too.
The morel 8's are lovely, which is why I bought some :D They'll fit easily into most doors with a bit of work, as they're very shallow and light. They also play down to 28Hz, so a 55Hz crossover at 12dB should do you nicely (although I haven't yet tested this)
My 8w3v2's were in 0.3ft sealed enclosures in the passenger cabin of my car.
re:your aimed tuning.. sounds about right, but nothing will be set in stone until you get everything in your car and tested.

bassadikt 02-03-2004, 10:14 AM thanks mullet,
how do you think the morels or 8w3v2's would sound powered my an alpine mrdm500 which will put out roughly 290wrms to each midbass. is this overkill or can the w3 's / morels take it?
mulletboy2 02-03-2004, 10:23 AM I don't think either the W3's or the morels could take that consistently, but you'd have ample headroom from the amp. Not too much wasted, but plenty in reserve :)
You're looking at 2 different types of speaker really - the 8W3 is a sub whereas the WR8 is a midbass... you're also looking at a bit of a funny frequency range - it's in the middle of bass and midbass.... I'd have trouble choosing in your position.
Why not look at a Morel 2 or 3 way setup with the 8 inch midbass? The overall cost would be less, you'd need less amps etc...
bassadikt 02-03-2004, 11:52 AM ok thanks for your help mate, much apreciated.
Buff - sure you didn't blow them by throwing bucket loads of clip at them? :(
100% positive gain is properly set so no clip even at full volume which i never use. ive never went over 25 on the alpine with the XR's was @ 30 occasionaly with the infinites but the JL's are so efficient theres no need
still not 100% sure if its blown though. just was getting a tiny bit of distortion on some notes (perfect on most though) from the left mid but it hasnt done it recently :) no idea whats up :(
mulletboy2 02-03-2004, 12:25 PM Good luck sorting it mate. FWIW, I thought one of mine was blown for a while, but it was me imagining things ;)
