It's time for a new pc, the old one is going to my dad
as he needs a quicker pc for the internet,
at the mo he's got a pentium 116mhz (slooooooow)
so will you computer literate guys build me a system,
just the base unit, already got a montor, mouse and keyboard.
The system will be mainly used for the internet (blueyonder broadband)
and large file swapping so it must be quick and have alot of strorage space.
Hopeing to run XP.

You've got £500 - £600, take the challange if you dare.

any preferences (games, intel/amd?)

No games played due to PS2,
to be honest i don't know the difference between the Intel and the AMD,
i've been told that the Intel is supposed to be a better chip and that the AMD is the cheap man's Intel.

I will leave that decision to you lot, basically it wants to be super quick for the internet and file swapping.

Sorry i can't be any more help.

500-600... you can get roughly anything you want.

biggest expenses will be a TFT screen. want one of those? theyll take most of the budget.

then think about if you want a dvd writer.

;) as eyebeefa stated, i would definetly thin about a DVD recorder if it could also record cd's
but thats at the bottom of the list,

well heres a stab.
gone for quality rather than quantity.
has a DVD-RW as well as a DVD-ROM
512mb ram
200gb hard disk
graphics card you should be able to play the odd game on as well.

very nice indeed, although personally I'd go for a slightly smaller hard drive and crucial instead of corsair RAM and see if you could get a RADEON 9600 pro, otherwise that's a very good system for the money! The graphics card is the only downfall but if you're not at all tempted to play PC games then fair dos, I'd get it!

do you need anyone to build it!? ;) also, Bic-mac-please is offering the same processor and similar board for less. Let me know and I'll see if I can come up with a built price if it takes ya fancy. Also, are you going to any meets as that would be the best way of transfering said system...

cheers for the offer TomG but
I want to build this one for myself, gives me something to do
and it would be the first time i've built my own.
I've done bits and bobs and i feel that i can do it.

fair enough, it's easy really. The hardest part is installing the operating system!!

crucial ram at DDR3200 is only CAS3, that ram is CAS2, so quite alot quicker.
he wanted loads of space and not bothered about games, hence those choices.
i did spec a pair of 160gb drives to start with, but i couldnt make it work for the money, however if you didnt want the DVD-RW you could have a pair of 160gb drives for 320gb in total

Maxtor hard drives are noisy - I'd go with a Seagate if possible, one of the Plus version with 8mb cache. Very quick and silent.

I'd go with a Antec Plusview case, very good for the money. You need a PSU, but its a really nice case.

And why do you have this unused equipment?

I agree about the Crucial being CAS3 but, you're not likely to notice the difference unless you do loads of benchmarks and strive to be the best in the land. I have PC3200 Crucial ECC RAM and I run it at CAS 2 with no probs...

i doubt that i will need 320gb of space, 120 will be enough.
As for the ram, i need the quickest so please decide for me.
