OK, I bought an Antec 92mm case fan the other day, stuck it in the back of my case, and now that coupled with the noise form the psu makes it sound like it could take off!! the psu is a q-tec 550w from ebuyer, dual fan. is there anyway to turn them down a bit? everything ive done with this pc seems to have been wrong, what with buying a dodgy mobo and all...

its even loader than the 6 yr old pc in the study, i thought technology would have advanced and fans would be quiet

yeh look at buying a fanbus

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Controllers.html

bascailly they restrict the voltage to teh fans and so slows them down, i have the Vantec Nexus NXP-201 Fan Controller - Silver and it keeps my delta 7k rpm heatsink fan and the other 6 fans nice and quiet! but when im playing a game i can trun the fans up to keep the GFX card cool etc :)

will that let me control the psu fans aswell or just the case fan? if its just the case fan i might be better getting a more expensive but quieter running fan for the same price as the fanbus

erm you would have to mod the psu to get it to do that?!

is your q-tec fan one of those gold items? i think theyre rated at 32db. cant you take it back?

im thinking of buying one, but im going for the single 120mm fan version. 26db

yup thats the one, didnt know the dB rating when i bought it. got it from ebuyer, so i dont think theyll have it back now ive used it. i think the antec is 30 something dB as well.

dunno what to do now

ive noticed that the dB rating is dependant on the voltage the fan is getting. at the mo it is connected straight to the psu which im guessing gives it maximum voltage. if i use the casefan connector on the mobo, would the voltage be lower and so the fan quieter?

on those qtec ones, the fan speed is variable with the system temp. if the psu gets warmer, the fans speed up.

is it quieter with the casework off? could try n sound deaden it (marley tape etc)

also... those gold psus, aparently they have shorter power cables than other brands, did you have any troubles at all?

also, how many of those 4pin molex connectors have they got?

thats the one i wanna buy. 26db

i guess youd have to open up the actual psu, unwire the fan, wire it to an independant fan controller.

or do something really daft and buy two new quieter fans and stick those in there. a lot of BS. id try sound proofing it all. should bring the noise down.

ive got 4 80mm fans in my PC. 2 of them are case, one cpu, one psu, its pretty quiet, the psu is definately the loudest... hence the 26 Q-Tec

well i have the ones in the psu, but ive also got a 92mm one. i meant to plug that one into the mobo, sorry i wasnt clear on that. i also have a spare coolermaster 80mm fan which i thought about putting in the psu, on its on its 20 some dB. is the 33dB from the current fan setup in the psu made up of 16.5dB per fan? or is two fans making 33dB each still only 33 dB when added together? i dont really know how that sort of stuff works

In my experience, those Qtec PSUs are actually very very noisy and don't shift a great deal of air. I have several "quiet" fans in my case as well as 5 HDDs, the noiseiest thing is the sound of rushing air (sounds like that's what you're getting), not the actual fans spinning. There's not really a great deal you can do about the rushing air noise if you want the air to still be rushing! You could try making the access points for the fans better so they don't have to suck air through really constricted gaps but that's about all you can do.

also, is a lot of the noise you hear really the vibrations from the fans reverberating round the metal case, much like the panels in a car. so sound deadening like you say should help it?

well its not a buzzing noise or anything like that, could just be the air rushing through. think ill try sound deadening a bit anyway

and very expensive...

I have a feeling it may be case? You mention the case resonating? Does it stop when yout touch the noisey part of the case. Those Q-Tec PSU's should be fairly quiet. We sell those ones where I work (Gold plated, duel fans, comes in red-White box). Alrite you can hear them slightly, but not to the extreme that you are describing, so may be dodgey bearing, or a loose screw on the PC case?

dont have the cash available for watercooling, and a bit ott for my machine.

it may be the case resonating, but i wouldnt expect it of a 60 quid case that is very sturdy and well made. ill have to see if it stops if i touch the backing plate or something.
