View Full Version : Jl13w7 Or Re Xxx15????
simzimma 17-01-2004, 01:49 AM ok guys just wanted to know what u lot think of these? which one is best for streetbass, sq and spl?
and box wise, just say they both in their most optimum box etc..
Mr Bump 17-01-2004, 01:53 AM Personally the XXX but others will say the W7.
If everyone chose the same items the world would get very boring.

thats what it'll come down to, and i know most people here will talk about the idmax and the h2 etc... but it's just cos they all perform well
mitulparmar787 17-01-2004, 04:22 AM I'd choose the JL if you have the money and an amp that can do 1000-1500wrms @ 3ohms or 0.75ohms otherwise the XXX if you don't have the money :).
simzimma 17-01-2004, 04:24 AM how about hifonics bx1500d, thas 1500@1ohm
majsvibe 17-01-2004, 04:40 AM na i personally think u should go 4 the MTX thunder9500 it`s much better then the W7.but it`s all personally want your sub to sound like really
ollie2001 17-01-2004, 05:08 AM I had a chat with a guy at Ice Direct (peterborough Ice shop) and he's a proper JL certified guy, knows his stuff...he's been to miami and seen the guys that make those bad boys! Apprantly they're ace...I had a quick listen to a 10" w7, they hardly make any real sound, but boy do you feel it! They eat power as well...
I haven't had the pleasure of an XXX yet, hope someone has one at L5 I can take a gander at :)
I'm actually getting a HC15 my self...as I don't have as much cash as I'd like ;) who does? :p
When your spending that sort of money you'll find that they can do SQ and SPL, just depends on the enclosure and the power you're feeding it...good luck whatever you choose!

true true i ain;t got much cash either, but better to buy summin good than summin which i'll regret, even though both subs are amazin from what i heard
ollie2001 17-01-2004, 05:34 AM Indeed, its better to squeeze the extra cash now than have the extra cash later asking your self where it all went wrong ;) only kiddin
I'm sure whatever you choose will be great for you! Its all down to personal preference...
mini_basser 17-01-2004, 05:48 AM Lets just say I was pleasantly suprised by the amount of bass created by a 10W7 in a sealed box with 500w RMS ;)
1kw + ported and with 13" really would be something...

I listened the very same thing today...was it JL's own box too?
I was very impressed with it also...so, as you said, double the wattage and dump it in a ported...all i have to say is: :wow:

bassadikt 17-01-2004, 06:03 AM is the jlw7 13 a more capable streetbass diver than the h2 15? i cant decide between the h2 15", xxx 15" and jl w713" what i want is the loowest most forcefull bass possible in the boot of a saxo, id put 2.5k into the h2 and xxx or a jl 1000/1 into the w7.
what would work out best in my case?
James M 17-01-2004, 06:04 AM I'd take the XXX15 over the JL13w7, wish I had gone for the 15" and not the 12" now

I would have thought the H2 would have the edge on power handling but the XXX will pound with 2.5kw going through it but you can kiss your warranty good bye
ollie2001 17-01-2004, 06:09 AM you can have listen to mine mate :)
Thanks, I might just have to take you up on that! What you driving and look like? So i have some sort of idea who I should be wondering towards :D
And bassadikt, I hope you've sound deadened that car till the cows come home...its french after all :p
bassadikt 17-01-2004, 06:09 AM yeah, i will probably go for the h2 but vd says the xxx can take more power, i cant make my mind up which one to get!
bassadikt 17-01-2004, 06:10 AM oh i know! im waiting till spring / summer! i wont be installing the equipment till then either just want it so i can measure up etc.
ill be purchasing probably 2 bulk packs from cad
James M 17-01-2004, 06:12 AM well there are people on here that have given a XXX 4kw but that would not be daily driving, best thing to do is get to a meet and have a listen to as many as you can and make you own mind up
cannondale99 17-01-2004, 07:16 AM My XXX-15 is a very capable driver even in a sealed box, which comes to around 2 cubes after displacement, so its quite a small box :)
Both, the H2 and XXX are super performers, and would possibly eat the W7 in terms of raw output in the right boxes.
You need to plan your installation before making any decisions as to which sub you want to go for, i.e.
What are you after, SPL, SQL or SQ?
How much space are you willing to give up in the boot?
Do you want ported, sealed, or what?
What power (if any yet) do you have available?
What are you running up front?
e.t.c.
mini_basser 17-01-2004, 02:59 PM I hope this isnt too sweeping a statement, but if someone is relatively new to car audio and have never heard anything as high end as a XXX/W7/H2 getting a few kw (in the right box, well set up etc) before, ANY of the drivers will not fail to disappoint you. If you buy one and spank it with that much power, unless you were a basshead in a previous life, the vast majority of normal people arent going to say "<sigh> I wish I had bought the ___ instead"
Just my 2p ;)

2cuft is not a small box 0.5cuft is a small box!!!!!!

i would be crying
Mallett's Mallet 17-01-2004, 04:58 PM na i personally think u should go 4 the MTX thunder9500 it`s much better then the W7.but it`s all personally want your sub to sound like really
Oh go away.
Onnie 17-01-2004, 05:09 PM H2 15 with 2500wrms is devistating in a saxo, ask Blade :wow:
u can feel it vibrating ur chest, difficult to breath sometimes!! i love that sub..
JL W7, i have only heard a 10 off a 1000/1 i think (beemarman), tis a beautiful sub, very tuneful, tight and punchy, but at the same time great depth.. a 13W7 would be very impressive definately.
XXX not heard properly yet :( but so many people love them and they have XBL^2 and that monsterous Xmax, it must surely be an awesome driver.
i think the question here is they are all awesome drivers, but all sound different. u have to have a listen and see which one suits ur style better?
:)
Onnie 17-01-2004, 05:09 PM MTX Thunder9500? arent they the ones built just for pure SPL use??
bassadikt 17-01-2004, 05:22 PM the x-max on an xxx on the cad site is 38mm cos on the re site its less than that?
whats the ture figure?
Onnie 17-01-2004, 05:24 PM as far as im aware its 38mm for the new ones. the old ones were 34mm or something like that...
even 34mm is still bonkers! and thats all linear! one way!!
BassNazi 17-01-2004, 05:46 PM for no reason that i can explain i don't like/have ever owned a JL sub but have heard loads of them though-nice all round sound.
Don't know the RRP of the JL but i am willing to bet it is overpriced and is more than a XXX
TBH if the subs were the same price i would go for the XXX for S.B.L. 2p'sw
mini_basser 17-01-2004, 06:00 PM na i personally think u should go 4 the MTX thunder9500 it`s much better then the W7.but it`s all personally want your sub to sound like really
How is that exactly? Have you done and A/B comparison of both?
M:B
BassNazi 17-01-2004, 06:06 PM The MTX t9500 is not the the SPL sub- that one is called the RFL.
The 9500 i saw at the Euro dbdrag finals on stand .They are huge and reminded me alot of the eclipse ti's but they didn't have a demo car. Anybody got prices for these?
vegabass 17-01-2004, 06:51 PM The XXX comes in at around the £400 or so mark, and the W7 is about double that! So for that reason, considering there is so little between the two drivers, I would go with the XXX every time, just to save myself about £400!
mitulparmar787 17-01-2004, 07:16 PM Also just to clear it up the XMAX on the 13W7 is measured using the overhung method and not Dumax verified so I guess you could say it is a bit underrated? ;)
40's and deaf 17-01-2004, 09:26 PM Ok, it's a 13 W7 running from a JL 1000/1 and it's in the grey box in my gallery piccie.
The box is currently fingers crossed tuned to 23 Hz as this gives a less peaky sound and gives a reasonable but not brilliant figure for group delay...about 20 mSecs at 20 odd Hz but getting in line with a sealed box when in the 30's Hz.
I've set it up using JL's suggested optimum settings and whether it's some sort of SQ/ageing effect coming into play I find I don't tend to use the remote bass at all...well nearly.
What's it sound like ? well if you've got a dodgy recording with say a bit of turntable rumble or maybe wind/auditorium noise this combination can give you that sort of thing at probably 130 dBs plus...
Might have tuned it a bit low but there was an argument on here at one time about whether or not a note of 18 Hz was ever reproduced musically or indeed was relevant anyway...from experience and on an SQ note almost here if it's in the recording I'm going to pump it out and in all honesty there really is quite often extreme low frequency music information present in a recording just as there is also ultra sonic content...great for bats and whales :shiny:
Ultimate verdict is you get what you pay for with any of the subs previously mentioned but if I was starting over I must admit the financial advantage of the XXX takes some beating and yes I do think the JL products are over priced...now if I was buying a car the comparison would be equally...sadly I'd still take the 5 series Beemer over the Mondeo...even the ST220
simzimma 18-01-2004, 02:02 AM what if i say i can get them for around the same price then what?
ollie2001 18-01-2004, 02:04 AM Then we call you dodgey ;)
simzimma 18-01-2004, 02:08 AM na na it's all legal and everythin :)
ollie2001 18-01-2004, 02:20 AM i'm sure you'll be havin a few ppl being your "best friend" in the very near future then! :D
simzimma 18-01-2004, 04:48 AM i'm sure you'll be havin a few ppl being your "best friend" in the very near future then! :D
haha :D
Mr Bump 18-01-2004, 04:53 AM So your saying you can get the JL cheap?
Surely if you liked the JL that much money wouldnt come into it?
But then if the JL is cheap how good is the warrenty? Heaven forbid something goes wrong but will you be covered.
Id still choose the XXX, just for the logo on the dust caps ;)
Ben
BassNazi 18-01-2004, 05:35 PM If you kill the JL can you get recones?
