There is no such thing as a undisputed king of SPL as everyone has their own opinions but there are some very capable subs around.
I remember seeing a post on another forum with a picof a MTX sub it must have been 8 foot in diameter it did silly numbers at low Hz so i think that has to be my king but yes you couldnt go far wrong with a few DD9917's

Id doubt the 9917 was.

There are so many big names sponsered that they use what they are given.

Yes DDs are good and popular but so are MTX, Team RF, SPL D etc

Its down to personal choice IMO

good point so I suppose the question should be, what would be your driver of choice given money is no object

Driver isnt as big a deal as people make out.

Aslong as they can handle the power you are planning on using then they will be ok.

Box means alot lot more any fancy sub.

its all in the install then

Not all, you do need the right equipment but you can still get very very loud with the "wrong" equipment.

Install is definately first on my list of priorities and probably second aswell, equipment comes third.

DD9917, well I would say that ;)

Having done some direct sub swaps to DD, and gained db everytime, is not something the lesser sub companies want to hear... :p

The speaker really isn't that important. Neither are the amps, you could use 1 massive 6K amp or 6 1K amps and still get the same result..

As long as the speaker can take the power and use it well...
