View Full Version : Amateur again!!looking at getting some rockys instead of JBL 12" subs-oppinions plz!
Paul (Beginner) 15-01-2004, 10:45 PM This one is probably an open and shut case.....
I bought 2 JBL GT4 12" subs just before christmas they are 250rms and 1000w peak, now i have been offered by my local ICE speciallists 2 rockford fosgate 12" subs for the same price (£50 each) they are 200rms and i dont know the peak on them, should i take the JBL's back and get the rockford fosgates?
i will have a rockford fosgate 400a4 amp powering them aswell so this could swing it?
I think its gonna definatly be the rockfords but i want the oppinions of the people who know, not the people who want my money!!!
Thanks in advance for any help...

Bibby 15-01-2004, 10:48 PM Why would you want to swap your subs? Don't you like what you have now? Have you tried different enclosures, or are they in sealed boxes from a shop?
What are you trying to achieve?
Rockford 15-01-2004, 10:48 PM Go for the RFs. I have heard a few JBL subs and haven't been impressed with the results.
They're probably old XLCs - very good subs. Or they could be the newer HEs, but the low price makes me think they're an older model.
jamiebae 15-01-2004, 10:52 PM I'd just stick with what you've got and save up for something a bit better. The RFs will probably be the RFZ models which are no better than the JBLs.
However, if for some crazy reason they are RFP 3412 which are last years model then snap them up!
Rockford 15-01-2004, 10:54 PM The RFs will probably be the RFZ models which are no better than the JBLs.
Not at 200W RMS.... :)
Paul (Beginner) 15-01-2004, 11:51 PM i havent fitted my JBL's, still boxed-just thought that the rockfords would be a better option and that i should take the JBL's back and get them, they are the z-series?
What about the bottom of the range JL's?
Basically whats the best bugget subs, i might be able to get a JL audio kit out, amp, subs , and three ways at the front quite cheap!!!
Paul (beginner)
Oh and MTX? thoughts on them?
Mart@BassJunkies 16-01-2004, 12:52 AM IMO when i heard a jbl sub i really didnt think to much of it but then again if its a z series rockford your not gonna be any better off. also it would help if you told us what you buget is for just under 200 quid you can get some real beasts. or did you mean buget 100ish?
RE SE12 600watts rms but is known to take alot more 184.99
A/D/S 500 watts rms 1000 watts peak 149.99
thats just two subs that came into mind BTW the price are taken off the CAD shop
majsvibe 16-01-2004, 12:58 AM well the gt3 from jbl are not bad subz for a person 4 a buget i had a pair and i got to 137.1dbs with it with is not bad
majsvibe 16-01-2004, 01:01 AM mtx thunder9500 are brillant subz with are meant to be better then jl`s w7 series (well i`ve heard the thunders and it extemly impressive)
Ruckus 16-01-2004, 01:50 AM mtx thunder9500 are brillant subz with are meant to be better then jl`s w7 series (well i`ve heard the thunders and it extemly impressive)
and that has what? to do with this thread ?
and i'll have a W7 of a MTX anyday...
mini_basser 16-01-2004, 01:53 AM mtx thunder9500 are brillant subz with are meant to be better then jl`s w7 series (well i`ve heard the thunders and it extemly impressive)
Midly out of budget there...
If they are both similarly priced subs, with similarly power ratings (the JBLs are even rated higher. And by the way, MAX means sod all ;)) I dont see how you would benefit from changing them
Would you swap them with the shop? Or would you have to sell the JBLs?
M:B
jamiebae 16-01-2004, 04:13 PM The bottom end JL subs are the W0, they're pretty good but won't take much more than 200w RMS each. Gav D was running a pair of 12W0 in the boot of his Clio and said that my single 10W3 was louder so bear that in mind when you're thinking about going for 2 cheap subs.
Paul (Beginner) 16-01-2004, 06:24 PM so i want to try and get the W3's, what about the mtx road thunders and tunders whats the best here, W3 still better, but are the mtx's better than the W0?
Thanks again every1
B16 DB's 19-01-2004, 08:04 AM i would say the mtx road thunders are the mtx bottem line as with the JL W0.
if u can find a dealer selling MTX thunder 6000 series (very good in small enclosures, drop very low and hard) - u wouldn't be disapointed
if u want more go for the thunder 8000 series (same as mine)
haven't heard the thunder 9500 series - judging by comments from the US they are providing some competition with the W7's
Paul (Beginner) 19-01-2004, 04:49 PM i am trying desperatly to get two JL W3's, but not likly, so the mtx's are good then, thanks for that, how much did your mtx 8000's cost?
Thanks

Onnie 19-01-2004, 05:19 PM why dont u just get one W3?
one RE SE12 will do u extreamly proud/
for budget bass the Pioneer TS-W305C are extreamely good.
Have u got the amp thats going to power them already? if not, we can recommened something to suit the sub u will get..
What is ur overal budget? how much space are u willing to give up for the box? what music do u listen to mostly?
:D
B16 DB's 19-01-2004, 05:41 PM i got my mtx 8000's back in the summer (from the US, couldn't find many places doin mtx gear around here for good price) so i got them cheap.
i haven't seen many users of the mtx subs around, but the installs i have heard have always impressed me.
i think the 8000's are a bit out of your price range - have a look round to see if u can find any 6000's at a reasonable price.
i haven't even used my 8000's yet, still in the process of gettin a box designed for them.
Paul (Beginner) 19-01-2004, 08:25 PM I know i am probably stupid for saying this but... i just want two 12" subs, just always have and always will!!!
Arent the JBL GT4's better than the pioneer's???
I am probably going to get a rockford fostgate 400a4 amp to power the subs i get, beginning to think that i should stick with the GT4's as i aint going to better them at this price range am i?
Got about £200 to get the two 12" and some components... i have got some custom kick builds for my car, but are designed for the JL 3ways! (too expensive for me) so i am looking at getting either a 4"component or a 6" component and putting a co-axel in the other hole?!"£$$%$%^^
I supose i am making no sense... i basically have the follwing holes in my car i need to fill for £200
2x12"
2x1"
2x6"
2x4"
Suggestions would be very much appreciated.....i have a ****** sony 2channel amp too power the fronts for the time being 2x55w rms...
Thanks everyone

Paul (Beginner) 19-01-2004, 08:26 PM Oh and the boot can disappear for all i care!!
Paul (Beginner) 19-01-2004, 08:32 PM what music do u listen to mostly?
:D
mostly rock, and drum and bass... but everything goes through my speakers, except garage!!!dont like garage, unless ****ed!!but it is all personal oppinion!!
-SuperiorSounds- 19-01-2004, 08:39 PM to be real honest, if i was in the same position, id get marko's JBL 15's. they are the older ones, but my god are they good drivers and at 150 for 2, youre laughing. all theway out of your dealer :D
Onnie 19-01-2004, 08:52 PM I supose i am making no sense... i basically have the follwing holes in my car i need to fill for £200

NOT A CHANCE IN HELL M8! if u want ANY sort of quality of sound then theres no way ur gonna do all that for £200.
U have asked for advice, i will give u advice, upto u if u want to take it.
Your thinking i'll stuff as many speakers as i can into my car to make it well loud - NO, it will not. To make crystal clear loud music u GOT TO have a decent amp driving reasonable quality speakers.
IF i was you, i would try to get 6" components, if your not into it that much, then get a 6" coax set, a decent amplifier, something like a Rockford Fosgate Power 551x or a Crystal CAM 240.4, ONE sub, u just havent got the budget to get two reasonable quality subs, so ONE SUB, a pioneer will be nice, the JBL are not too bad actually.. try to listen to both and pick what u like best, but IMO get pioneer, its a great sub for the money, works off little power but also if u come to upgrade later it can take the upgrade quite well...
all in my opinion m8, i hope this helps? :)
u might like to try a ported box as well to get a boost in the low notes and efficiency. 2^ft tuned to 35hz should be alright.
Paul (Beginner) 19-01-2004, 09:11 PM Thats fair enough Onnie... like you say, its all oppinions!!
However my veiw isn't, stuff as many preakers in as possible and i suddenly have a loud system!!!
I am quite happy with my 6x9's and an amp...for loudness, but i wanted better quality!!!
I wanted to put a sub in the boot but i like things to be symmetrical hence two 12"'s...
I chose 2 12"'s because i have been lead to believe that this is the best comprimise for bass (talking cheap subs not top end stuff), doesnt drown or miss beats like some cheap 15"'s but can still punch aswell as the 10"s
i got the front builds for free, they were used for the JL 3ways... i was only going to use a 6"in the door and a tweet, but now i have an extra 4" hole to fill, i will probably through in a cheap co-axel and run that of the HU, and run a 6" component set of my ****** sony amp for the time being!
the JBL GT4's were reduced from £100 to £50, they still cost £100 in halfords (although they are well expensive) and they are 250rms, i think i will stick with these and run them of the rockford fostgate 400a4 amp that i am getting soon, that should give the JBL's at least 200rms each...
I know this set up aint great but it will be my first set up on a budget, do you think this will work?
Thanks alot everyone

have u got a picture of those JL 3-way kick builds?????? i got those components and need some positioning ideas. what car are they for??
as for your system , start out simple : 2-way comps + 1 good 12" sub + good 4-channel amp
in the near future when your budget increases (because it definately will when u get into this ICE game) up-grade and get : another 12" sub + bigger sub amp
your better off spending on quality products to begin with rather than cheap stuff that you will end up getting rid of pretty soon.
Onnie 19-01-2004, 09:41 PM Paul if you make a bootbuild with the sub in the middle then u got symmetrical! :D
since u already have a 2channel amp, use that for 6" comps or coaxs upfront and buy a 2channel bridged to power one sub, if u are intent on buying two then get a small mono amp. look at the RF stuff.
Paul (Beginner) 19-01-2004, 10:32 PM i think i am getting closer to swallowing my pride, and opting for a single 12" and get a jl w3....
As for the the kick builds B16 DB's, they are in a fiat bravo!they are down the bottom half of the doors and then go into the foot well, probably not the best place for the tweet but safes me cutting the door card apart for now!!!havent got any pic's sorry, and i aint got a digital camera!
If i was making my own then they wouldny have been designed the same as the ones i have got.... how about you sell me the JL's dirt cheap!LOL...........that way you dont need to worry able the builds and i dont have to worry about the holes i have to fill...everyones a winner!!!LOL
Now i just dont know what to do?!"£$$%
