View Full Version : Good sub for streetbass
jamiebae 15-01-2004, 10:12 PM I feel myself turning to 'the dark side!!!' and I want a new sub which will do streetbass but still maintain some kind of SQ at the same time.
It'll be going in a ported box, tuned low, and powerd of my RF landmine 100.2 getting somewhere in the region of 550w RMS @2 ohms (so I'm told!!)
I have a (fairly long) shortlist of the following subs, cheaper would be nice but I'm prepared to spend up to about £180 if it's worth it!
RE SE 12 £189
SPL Dynamics Pro 12 D4 £150
Pioneer TS121 SPL £109
Kicker Comp VR 15 £135
DD 2012 £189ish
Crystal COMP8 £169
Cheers!
vegabass 15-01-2004, 10:14 PM I don't think the pioneers really do SQ at all. I don't know if you heard them at L4 but the general concensus was that they went loud, but that was it.
Blade 15-01-2004, 10:30 PM The DDs have a great reputation, and i'd have more confidence in them taking "streetbass abuse" really
I'm not sure the crystal would really be the way forward, not a huge amount of cone area there compared to some of the other offerings... Take a listen to wooseys SPL dynamics, thats low ported, with similar power as you will have, see what you think... he's been dead impressed with it, especially for the money :)
jamiebae 15-01-2004, 10:35 PM I'm kind of leaning towards the Kicker, I've read some good reviews of the 12" version, TCA (I know it's not saying much!!!) rated it as the best sub £200 sub available and I can get the 15 for £135, the only downside is it wants about 3 cu ft ported according to the specs which is a bit big really!
The DD and Crystal are both 4 ohm SVC too so they'd be getting less power, probably something like 400-450w.
Blade 15-01-2004, 10:36 PM Definitely do-able in a saxo though Jamie!
jamiebae 15-01-2004, 10:41 PM Yeah, but it would be bye bye boot and I'd quite like a bit of space in there somewhere to keep my hockey kit!
If anyone has any other suggestions then fire away, I'm also tempted by one of the PPI 10 inchers which are about £230 off CAD in D4 config so I could use my current box for a while too!
Blade 15-01-2004, 10:42 PM I've heard good things about those PPIs... I'm putting one in a friends car currently, with 900wrms on it, I'll let you know how things get on... He has the same aims as you, and it'll be run ported
puggie 15-01-2004, 10:43 PM Advice: Put your hockey kit on the back seat.
vegabass 15-01-2004, 10:45 PM Hmm I've just been playing with BBP and that CVR15 just doesn't want to drop! I don't think it'll go low enough for streetbass even in a 3cu ft @ 28hz enclosure! I think you want decent response right down to about 30hz for decent streetbass. Obviously the SE12 can be recommended here, because it's been proven 100 times over about it's streetbass performance, even in reasonably sized enclosures.
jamiebae 15-01-2004, 10:48 PM Puggie - Hockey kit is on the back seat now, currently sitting on full view in the station car park with a couple of £100+ sticks in a bag!
Neil - Cheers for looking at that, I don't suppose you could do the same for the PPI 10 incher (I don't know the model no but it's £230 on CAD) and even the SPLD sub if you're really bored! :)
Migroo 15-01-2004, 11:32 PM I'd go with an SE 12 to be honest.
BTW: I thought your RF was a silver with gold end caps? If so, its not called a landmine.. the landmine series were black with lots of fins.
bassmechanic 16-01-2004, 05:31 AM stick with a 15" sub jamie :D
boot space....your kidding right? :p
vegabass 16-01-2004, 06:19 AM Well I've put the T/S params of the PPI DCX104 and BBP really doesn't like the numbers - it's autocalculate gets the FS to 1.2hz instead of 40hz and the VAS it reckons should be 16918 litres! Anyway, assuming that the figures are correct (I assumed all the figures they give on their website are for the sub wired in series... the Re and (obviously) Z seem to indicate that), I plotted a few graphs and their recommendation of 0.6cu ft sealed give good low end extension, and if you go for a 1.5cu ft 28hz ported enclosure then it drops very nicely... giving an F3 cutoff of 26.67 hz! As I say though, I'm not 100% confident that the graphs are correct because BBP doesn't like them, but I'm sure I've entered them right so who knows!
As for the SPL dynamics sub, 1.8cubes tuned to 28hz looks like it'll go loud (a fair bit of enclosure gain) with a peak of about 49hz (4.75db up) crossing the 0db line at 32hz and having an F3 of 27hz. So not bad but there is a lot of output in the 50hz region which may mean that it appears to not drop quite as well as say, an SE12 in the same enclosure.
I would take the SE12 over these two to be honest.
HTH
Neil :)
jamiebae 16-01-2004, 03:38 PM Migrane - You're right, except mine has chrome endcaps because someone stripped them before I got it! Any idea what king of power it's likely to give out at 4 and 2 ohms then?
BM - I need to use my car you know, it's not just a mobile disco!
Neil - Cheers for that, much appreciated! I'm leaning towards the PPI, partly because it's a 10 and according to your figs will work well in my current sealed box until I build a ported one and partly because nobody else runs them! I don't really want to follow the herd with an SE and might be tempted to take the 10 over the 12 if I did get one, that way I can add a second one and still compete in the lowest SPL class, plus I much prefer the sound of my 10W3 to my old 12 inch RFP.
That Kicker 15 needs a massive box to work properly, 3 cu ft is the minimum ported size reccomended so I think I'll have to rule it out all together really.
Migroo 16-01-2004, 06:17 PM Jamie :)
At 4 ohms around 400W or so. At 2 ohms, well I'd say around 450W +. Its very hard to give an accurate figure as so much depends on your powersupply.
Rather than specify a number, I'll just say that:
1) Whatever the number is, say X watts, its a very solid X watts.
2) The amp has enough to run an SE into very painful levels (I've heard a 125.2 which is an updated 100.2 (not much power increase) on a ported SE 15 and it HURT like ******y)
:D
If you want streetbass then I'd heavily reccomend that you go with drivers larger than 10"
jamiebae 16-01-2004, 06:21 PM I'm currently working on 'other plans' as well now..... ;)
Cheers for that Chris, looks like you're taking over from Dale as the resident RF expert here!
Migroo 16-01-2004, 06:49 PM Anytime mate.
No I'm just standing in for Dale when he doesnt notice posts (he's pretty busy atm too). :D
Blinkybill 16-01-2004, 07:00 PM Hmm i would'nt go 10" TBH.
I would go 12" ported, i would of said the 3512 but out of the list, if the amp will be happy at 2 ohm, then in this order for me :)
RE SE 12 £189
Pioneer TS121 SPL £109 ( need abit more power really and i would say they an't that good at S.Q. )
SPL Dynamics Pro 12 D4 £150
DD 2012 £189ish
Kicker Comp VR 15 £135
Its tuff deciding between DD and Kicker, because the kicker is a 15" it will help, but its a saxo there for 12" would be better IMO
Crystal COMP8 £169
jamiebae 16-01-2004, 07:04 PM Thanks for the help guys, a decision has been made and you will be informed of it in due course! ;)
Blade 16-01-2004, 07:43 PM Just because your an SPL boy now, doesn't mean tou need to inherit their self important secret keeping ;)
jamiebae 16-01-2004, 07:49 PM Who said I'm an SPL boy now, maybe I changed my mind and went for pure SQ instead.
Maybe I'm just going back to my stock single cone paper speakers and Citroen HU.
Maybe I'm going to buy a XXX 15 and whoop your sorry H2 ass in the lanes :p
You'll just have to wait and see! ;) :D
Blade 16-01-2004, 08:13 PM Your welcome to give it a go ;)
Sher@Utopia 16-01-2004, 10:05 PM if i found this thread earlier, im sure i could have persuaded you to buy my 12" Crystal CMPx2!!!
Anyways....im sure you made the right choice
jamiebae 16-01-2004, 10:07 PM You probably could have done, or at least got me to buy one of them! Oh well, I'm happy with what I've ordered, I just need to build a box to house it now!
SwitchBlade 17-01-2004, 12:28 AM Is now a good time to mention that with that amount of power you'd probably get a hell of a lot of volume out of the CMP8, as well as probably keeping a fair amount of the SQ.
Jammi.l.]odG@ 17-01-2004, 12:46 AM Im gonna be at T9 with 4 10s and 1700w RMS. Unless I buy another RF 1501bd... :smoke:
