View Full Version : I love the smell of burnt VC in the morning...

I was just thinking to myself today: "I wonder if I get my home audio speakers to get a little stinky, VC style, like the crazier car stereos Ive experienced" My system gets played very loud pretty regularly (rattling my room and breaking things with Dillinja etc) but for the first time just now I managed go get that lovely toasting VC aroma out of the ports :clown: Burped a 40Hz tone through the cheapy floorstanders at just short of maximum volume, et voila ;)

Aside from that little anecdote, some useful info :D Can/will any permanent damage be imposed on a speaker by making the VCs get hot and smell like that? I probably should have asked this beforehand, but hey

Thanks

you frikkin loon - of course you are damaging them. dont do it again :whatever:

stuff like blades orion etc.. are *kinda* designed for the abuse - your floorstanders are not.

My advie would be to get a decent welding power supply, and short the cables with some thin speaker wire, while playing your home system at high, though not stupidly high level. this way youll get loud music, VC smell, and no damage to your speakers. You'll have to replace the wire on teh welding rig occaisionally when you have melted through the plastic. (which is what you are doing ot your home speakers VC)

Hahaha I wont do it again sir stu :D I turned it down after I smelt the smell, so hopefully any damage Ive done was minimised. Either way, the speakers were only £50 so its no great loss to me :)

Thanks for hijacking the thread the rest of ya :p

i got my home cinema set up too, but everytime i take it up to high volume my subs starts to fart, perhaps cos i got one ****** amp and that the box is fallin apart but still :) my floor standers are hard to fry, i put 20hz tome through them at max volume and nothin, no over heatin no nothin, just clean bass and no distortion :)

my pioneer spl's seemed to smell quite often, cant think why.

The box even when they had gone smelt of VC glue, might cut it up into thin sticks and sell them as incense sticks on e bay.
