View Full Version : The United Devices cancer screensaver
Jamie. 05-07-2003, 03:25 PM ive started a team if any of you wanna join up. i think its far more useful than the likes of SETi, you might actually be helping someone out in the future.
go to http://www.grid.org/projects/cancer/ and download the small program. once downloaded sign yourself up, and add you self to team Talkaudio.co.uk
might not be able to do much against cancer and the likes, but we might as well try!
Jamie
i downloaded it yesterday and when it asks me for a user name and password, it tell me it doesnt match the one on their system, well it wont will it.
so it dont work:(
ok, ignore that, used a diff user name, adding myself now
jjmillsy 05-07-2003, 04:08 PM Joined! Seems like a good cause, might even need it some day... lets hope not tho....

Rich-UK 05-07-2003, 06:12 PM Done ;)
SteveL 06-07-2003, 08:04 PM Just joined. Two more PCs running 24/7.
Steve
tw3ak 08-07-2003, 02:58 PM I'll set mine and my girlfriends computers up on it later
Gezzza 10-07-2003, 07:12 PM hmm can i transfer my 73,00 points over?
gary
I used that for months last year... im still a member of another group, but after having to format my hdd and installing it all again I never did get roudn to installing UCD again...
Ill look up my previous details and move it over to the talk audio one.
Its a great cause and if I can help in any way however small its worthwhile. we should all do the same - esp as most ppl on this board have more than 1 pc. and it dont take up loads of cpu power either.
well done for bringin this one up.
Baz :)
Im in :)
If everybody puts this notice up on other forums they use, this could make a difference!
Jamie... top idea this. Well done :)

Jamie. 03-08-2003, 04:49 PM come on guys, we have 14 members now. pretty bad seeing that we have over 5000 registered users! on the up side, we are all returning results regularly, up to 16 units a day!
keep it going!
Jamie:D
samuelellis 03-08-2003, 08:24 PM ive been running UD for about 3 years now

James M 10-08-2003, 07:19 PM just joined and I'll forward it to everybody I know that doesn't use the forum, can I use the machine at work and home with the same logon?
AlfaMan 10-08-2003, 10:29 PM Yep,
you can you just give it a new device id.
My little server runs 24x7, my home desktop runs when it's on and the works laptop is running when it's on mains......
Simon.
James M 11-08-2003, 12:35 AM Come on people out of 5,675 members we can only scrape 17, it might sound corny but you could help to make a difference just think if it was someone close to you that was suffering
Gav D 19-08-2003, 06:35 PM just signed up! not convinced I did it right but somethings definatly happening! :)
n_olympios 19-08-2003, 08:05 PM I downloaded it a couple of days ago, and already signed in @ TA. My pc is currently working towards the pox-disease cure or something like that...:)

Noooooooooooo, you don't want your PC working for the American military, if you go to your profile on the UD website, you can choose what your PC does, just select the Cancer one!!
n_olympios 20-08-2003, 05:20 PM Hmmm, I didn't like it either when I saw the description, but I didn't know I have such a choice.
Cheers, mate, will do later today when I get to the office.
n_olympios 21-08-2003, 12:40 AM Uhmm... maybe I'm being a little thick, but I can't find the option for cancer research there... What am I doing wrong?
Rich-UK 21-08-2003, 05:10 AM Just spent the best part of 20 minutes trying to find the option myself and I can't :red:
It's on the website somewhere though, I've seen it....
SteveL 21-08-2003, 02:05 PM You can change the Project you're helping with.
This link tells you how to do it:

n_olympios 21-08-2003, 03:51 PM Cheers, SteveL! It's all done now!
Rich-UK, thanks for trying mate!
Sorry to be the cynical one amoungst us, but are you sure this is legit? haven't really had a look at the site but seems a little far fetched,

CANCER PROGRAM NO HOAX. If you received an e-mail or read about plans to sign up computer owners who can ``donate'' their computer time to a cancer research program, you should know that the program is a legitimate one
I stand corrected :D
El Diablo 06-09-2003, 09:58 PM first time i've actually read this thread, the cancer research thing is obviously a good thing.... 1 thing isnt tho.
The technology was developed by United Devices, and includes a special screensaver. Whenever the screensaver is showing on a participating PC, it becomes one part of a huge ``virtual computer.'' By combining the computer power from thousands (or millions) of PCs, United Devices can offer some heavy-hitting processing to companies that may use it for cancer research.
According to a United Devices press release, the computing power possible could be ten times more powerful than today's highest performing supercomputer.
United Devices developed the peer-to-peer application that links all the computers together. The first computations will be used for the National Foundation for Cancer Research involving leukemia and drug-optimization research.
The peer-to-peer distributed computing technology was first created and used in conjunction with the SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) program. Its application is being developed for other purposes, and United Devices plans to make the sale of access to a ``virtual supercomputer'' a reality soon.
the 'first' computations are being used for this Cancer Research.....
then your computer processes are 'sold' as part of a supercomputer.
And I dont think whoevers taking that money intends on giving it to the people who are powering this 'SuperComputer' do you?
El Diablo 06-09-2003, 10:01 PM well thats what i interpret from what it says anyway - i could well be wrong
Hmm definately true, there is a always a reason behind things like this. Companies like Intel just don't sponsor projects for the sake of being "Mr Nice company"!
I reckon large companies, Goverment (mainly Military) will be buying the time thats spare
samuelellis 06-09-2003, 10:21 PM tbh i dont care if people make money off this
i saw my aunt die of cancer & by christ if i can in any way stop someone else goign though what my aunt & my family did then i will do owt possible
/me leaves the duron 700 crunching continaully (need a faster pc, if i could afford it i would ahve machines jsut sat doing pure UD with the thread priority jacked right up as far as it will go) have it set up to run continually int he background atm & no screensaver (gets more done, if you use the blank screen screen saver it wrigns a few more clock cycles free)
leevets 13-09-2003, 07:02 PM downloading it now and signing up
leevets 13-09-2003, 07:27 PM does it automatically start running or do i have to switch it on or something cos my cpu time counter isnt moving?
Rob_London 22-09-2003, 05:11 PM Not a charity then? (http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/6/18129.html)
Rich-UK 22-09-2003, 05:24 PM Originally posted by leevets

You can set it to run all the time or just as a screensaver, make sure it's set as your default screensaver (in Display Properties)
Skotbites 02-10-2003, 05:11 AM Done
James M 04-12-2003, 05:57 AM I seem to be racking up the cpu time

samuelellis 18-12-2003, 06:38 AM remember to tell it you only want the cancer work not the partiot project or sommat liek that
DtX3000 30-01-2004, 03:17 AM I'm a bit late but I just signed up and have 2 comps running, I'm member number 28 I think, wheres everyone else?
Just to be sure, Ligandfit cancer research project phase II, is that correct?
Patrick! 30-01-2004, 03:36 AM I have added myself to the team :)
B-Chi 24-03-2004, 01:27 PM I can't find how to register with a team. I lost my gramps to cancer, and if it helps it don't matter whether it's financial or what. At least it helps.
Leigh B 04-06-2004, 12:33 AM Im in the team! :)
I was looking at the task manager, and it was at 100% CPU time, until I did something like click a window, and it instantly turns off until your done! I like that!! :D
You have to selec preferences, and then on the webpage that pops up, you select teams, and type in talkaudio.co.uk :)
I don't care, every bit helps!
signed up :)
whats the deal with the points thing anyway?
samuelellis 06-06-2004, 06:50 PM no idea what it is with the points thing but tbh ive had it running since the scheme started and now i dont even notice the blue button, it jsut sits there with no interaction from me and gets on with it
wellso 24-06-2004, 09:33 AM this screensaver is wicked idea, well done to the folk who designed it
J-Man 23-08-2004, 01:56 PM Just signed up, i think iz a clever idea i hope i eventually reap the benefits ! :)

ollie2001 06-09-2004, 11:02 PM I'm signed up and churning away :p
only just spotted this thread, maybe a link in the general forum would be a good idea, im sure tta could improve on its 2841 ranking
I'm in too, dunno how much use I'll be though!
Every Little helps, come on guys join the fun :D
Only 38 members i am dissapointed
