Recently my Xbox 360 has decided not to shade the graphics, so the first flash screen with the Xbox sphere instead of the background fading from green to silver I get 5 concentric wobbly halos of green to silver with 3 different inbetween colours.

Its most noticable on Forza but also happens on the dashboard. its also an intermittent fault that happens after the first few minutes of being powered up, if you then reboot you occasionally then get a black screen.

the delightful Xbox360 support indian call centre was no help as the guy on the phone could not grasp the concept of shading which made explaining the problem a little tricky!

anyone had this problem before? does it sound like a send off for repair job?

Yes, just ring them and tell them the video is going awol, and therefore playing games etc is impossible.

Sounds like it's about to fall over :( If you get in touch with MS they should be able to sort you out.

Meh, according to the support site its out of warranty, so pulled it apart and hoovered out the heatsinks, seems to be working ok for now (with no case on).

EDIT: So any suggestions for better heatsinks for the 360, the std sinking looks crap and runs VERY hot, may have to move the drive out of the case.

It can't be. Bill put it back together, ring up support say the video is going all weird, it locked up and you saw 3 red rings. Get it sent off and receive another :)

So why when I look on the online warranty status does it say std warranty expired.

yes..

when you submit a repair request for rrod it will say you have 3 years.. just check your proof of purchase and hope they do the swap out before realising that you have opened it up!!

well I've hooverd out the heatsinks and put it back together, done 2 hours of Forza 2 this evening with no issues at all, I think its just the crap design over heating.

Might water cool it anyway if I have no more issues.

any probs and I'll send it back, I've done nothing to invalidate the warranty IMHO ;)

Bill, simply opening the case invalidates it, there is a seal stating this.
