Whats the best / cheapest way to connect a seagate 320gb external hard drive to a home wireless router/modem so that all the computers in my house can access the external hard drive (effectively wirelessly)??

It will be sat next to my wireless router, which is next to the TV too, and I will also connect the hard drive to my USB DIVX DVD player. Making quite a snazzy media system :clown:

I think the best way is to connect it to a PC then share it on your network. I think you just right click it and go to the sharing tab then tick the box.

To access it from another PC just go to Network Places (assuming you've set-up a network) and it should be there.

Ah yes, I hadnt thought of that!
EDIT: presumably the PC its attached to would have to be turned on as well? which would be a pain tbh

the other issue I had thought of is that the EHD only has 1 USB port, so I couldnt have it connected to the NAS / router and the DVD player at the same time anyway (though id only have to change the USB cable from one device to the other).

What about using this:

Its a netgear router with no modem that can attach to an external hard drive, which could then attach to my router?

the other option i guess is a linksys NSLU2?

get a external HD caddy with an ethernet port, like this....

or get an NSLU2 (you can add another disk later.

Stay away from netgear SC101

Bear in mind (as I found out recently) that the vast majority of NAS drives can only be formatted in FAT32, they don't support NTFS. Those that do use horrible proprietary workarounds that don't work most of the time. So you're stuck with a 4gb limit. Something to consider if you're planning on putting any dvd images on there...

any linux based one will use EXT3 (like the NSLU2)

when you say 4Gb limit I gather you mean 4Gb single file size limit

yeah, for the price a NSLU2 seems the nicer option, so i think i will do that (both are £30 on ebay).
Im not too bothered about the FAT32 thing, as I wont have DVD images. So I "think" that wont be a problem.

Now though, to have the external hard drive connected to BOTH the NSLU2 and the DVD player I think I will need a USB switch/hub?

Is it possible to get ones that allow simultaneous use? as most of the ones i found on ebay were switches, so one USB worked at once - which could be changed manually with a button on the unit or via software installed on each computer in the network.

Will this work or am i just better off changing the wire from one device to another?

You should swap your DVD player for an xbox :)

The linksys would use the usb connection so you won't be able to connect it to your DVD player.

I would try and find out if the HD caddys work with USB and ethernet at the same time.
