View Full Version : Laptop decider
RobbieS 20-11-2006, 12:34 PM From anyone's experience, what are Toshiba Laptops like.
I have found this laptop TOSHIBA (http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11173192&whse=BC&Ne=4000000&N=4017753&Mo=12&pos=6&No=11&Nr=P_CatalogName:BC&cat=29722&Ns=P_Price|1||P_SignDesc1&Sp=C&ec=&topnav) in the states. My parents are out there so could get it for me.
The other choice is an Acer ACER (http://www.shopacer.co.uk/sess/utn;jsessionid=154561a038e5a12/shopdata/0130_Notebooks/0033_Aspire/0050_Aspire+3100/product_overview.shopscript)
Both are around the same price and have similar options.
Which one wouls you go for?
jokeruk 20-11-2006, 12:39 PM I've got almost the same laptop - although mine has some mobile 3d chip in it.
My opinion, the Toshiba rocks - although, if its coming from america, be aware that the warranty may not be honoured in this country. (cos its a grey import).
Madmax 20-11-2006, 12:47 PM Tosh or IBM if you want good build quality to last if you move it around places
Acer if you want a cheap laptop to use around the home
ChrisC 20-11-2006, 12:57 PM The toshiba has bigger HDD but i'm not sure if your parents would get stung on bringing it back as its so expensive.
I'd go with the Acer. My Acer Travelmate goes everywhere - no one on here could argue with that.
It goes to all the meets, it gets chucked in the back of my car, it even has been known to go to the pub with me. Acer have in the past had a bad name but i can not praise them highly enough

My dad would bring it back as his personal laptop, so would get stung on any charges at all. The Toshiba has a 1 year international warranty, plus the folks spend most of their time in the states so its not a problem if it fails
It is mainly going to be used for email, net browsing, music and gaming. The only upside to the Toshiba is that it has more scope for upgrading tha the Acer, memory upgradable to 4Gb whereas the Acer is only 2Gb I believe.

You will never upgrade the RAM to 2Gb, if you need that power, you'll buy a new PC
foxie 20-11-2006, 01:47 PM Samsung Q35 :D

Yes you will, I did!!
SwitchBlade 20-11-2006, 02:54 PM If I were buying new the order of purchase would be IBM, then Toshiba, I'd not touch owt else.
Mike A 20-11-2006, 03:30 PM I've had trouble with Acer support for one of our work laptops. Similarly Sony haven't been great either, especially as the kit went to Belguim to be repaired.
I've brought Tosh laptops for work since 1995. Not the cheapest but a good rep.
(International) warranties could be a ballache, and I'd personally stick with getting a UK machine, regardless of manufacturer.
ChrisC 20-11-2006, 03:38 PM I suppose everyone gets different experiences from different companies. Some have great time with dell, others (like myself) have had loads of problems, also Rob, international warranties are a right @ss sometimes. Saying that, could your sister sort that out for you being where she is?
Shandy Sam 20-11-2006, 03:50 PM We bought about 20 tosh satalite pros 6100 a few years ago about 2 still work. 18 broke and some within warrenty and were repaired but then broke again from the same problem after the warrenty had ended. I wouldn't touch a Tosh now.

My sister or my parents could sort out the warranty no problems.
I think going by what people are saying it would be best to go for the Acer (less hassle). Obviously people have had different experiences with different manufacturers, a number of people have Acers which have been fairly reliable so that will be the choice I think :)
Edit: Also what is the AMD Sempron 64 3400+ processor like, any good?
