Went to switch on my Athlon machine for the first time in a month, and....nothing happened.

"Hmm," I mutter. "That's strange."

So, I go into fault-finding more, and it seems that the box has no power whatsoever. I assume that the kettle lead fuse has gone, so I swap it for another one and plug that in, making sure I switch off the PSU before I do so.

I then plug it back in and flick the switch, and..."Bzzzzzz....BANG!"

Sparks everywhere.

Arse.

That'll be a dead PSU then.

So now, I have to commit the ultimate sin, and go to PC World to buy a new supply, as there's stuff on that box I need to get to today :(

Fingers crossed it's just the PSU that's blown and it hasn't spiked everything else in the case...

Bah.

How can a man like you not have spare PSUs Ben?

Bad luck anyway mate, it's never nice when something goes pop!

Every geek has stacks of them lying around, even though they are generally worth nothing, they are 'too good' to throw out

can you not take the drive/s out and put them in another machine instead of selling your soul to DSG?

lol at Jamie, I've got a pile sat infront of me for that very reason

Meh, been meaning to put a decent PSU in there for a while now, as the crappy eBuyer special (500w for £9.99!) couldn't feed enough juice to run my graphics card (5900XT, so hardly the best of the best!).

Picked up a Jeantek jobbie for about £40 that looks quite smart and - more importantly - works!

I've got a psu you could've had if you weren't desperate for it.

I did the same thing years ago, but I had the lid off the PSU when a cap blew... just missed my face!

You're lucky, I blew the CD-RW, motherboard, graphics card and sound card

The exact same thing happened to mine a few months ago. Fried the motherboard and somehow managed to wipe all data from one of the hard drives that had been saved in the past week.

Always useful for 12v testing... if you can get round to modding them (it'll happen one day!)

PSU's are great.

I've had one in work running the custom alarm strobe and telephone system for the chiller alarm in work after the normal wall mount unit went pop ages ago.
