I've never understood how putting it on the bonnet is supposed to make it quieter when the sound can just come out of the bottom/front of the car.

directional...if it comes out the bottom, less chance of your ears picking it up....

but if the sound comes out the top.....;)

Many cars now use undertrays with sound absorbent materials on them, to prevent the downwards travel of sound ;) Also 'flaps' in front of the radiator, which allow airflow into the engine bay, but prevent noise passing out when stationary.
