whats going to be the best/most sensible way of deading a large volvo estate??

i wouldnt mind doing a decent job of thew whole care, but i dont wanna go nuts, so whats going to do the job??

luxury liner, damplifire pro, or sludge??

the boot floor, spare wheel well and sides will need doing, as will the doors (inner and outer skin) and i wouldnt mind doing some of the floor.

any suggestions:confused:

Well, the Volvo cars come with decent stuff under the carpet, similar to luxury liner... so no matter how good luxury liner is, it's not going to be a *vast* improvement over what's there already. If you're on a budget, I wouldn't go for LL in your particular car. Damplifier pro underneath the OEM deadening would be a good move. I'm adding a bulk pack of DP underneath the LL.

Question is though, what are you trying to deaden? Is the road noise too much, or are you looking to cure rattles, prevent localisation of the sub, stop doors from vibrating with speakers, or what?

A gallon of sludge did my entire boot, and that was added on top of 100 square feet of R-Blox... if you have to choose between one or the other, go for the deadening mat.

My boot floor got the R-blox treatment, and everywhere else in the boot (quarter panels, rear deck etc..) got R-Blox and Sludge. On top of that I'll probably put the OEM LL stuff I take out of the rest of the car.. but equally, you could use rubber/foam sheets, carpet underlay or whatever.. I wouldn't be too worried about road noise in the boot.. so again, spending a fortune on LL for there might be a bit of a false economy, given you're working to a budget.

mr p, i'd be weary of marks advice with sound deadening, this is a man that wants to remove his engine just so he can put some deadener on the firewall, hes quite clearly in the same looney category as mr miami.

Corrected for you mate ;)

eddy,

i know he's loopy, but he's the only one who knows a volvo as well as he does ;)

basically mark my system from the focus will be going in the volvo (if al the amps, processors, distie blocks etc fit!!)

so even though its fairly refined i want to remove some of the road noise, and also prevent/fix any vibrating panels etc.

the box will be an FG box moulded around the spare wheel (or space saver if i can get one) and some of the spare wheel well to gain a bit extra breathing room. then its either 2 or 3 way up front with all the amps etc hidden under the load floor for stealth purposes

MrP - coolio. In that case, I'd say you want to add DP to the floor in the cabin, firewall, roof (under the headliner), and maybe a sheet of motor mat under the bonnet (check the SecondSkin request for pics - I uploaded a couple of what I did with mine). For that you'll be looking at 2 bulk packs of DP or more, plus the motor mat. That'll be pretty much the best you can do re: road noise without spending a fortune, given how well it's already deadened.

Rattles I can't help with as I haven't had any decent bass to help find them yet..

I can't remember what your doors look like inside, but think we've been down this road before? On mine, deadening the outer skin with sludge was the only approach. I may add some luxury liner on top of the sludge at a later date... the cavity between the inner and outer skins doesn't come in to play on the 850 with regard to speaker enclosure.. so it's purely a road noise reduction exercise. The inner skin is heavy and solid, and there's very little space between the door card and the skin, so I could get a layer of Overkill in there, or possibly a single layer of DP .. which is best depends on whether your midbasses are going in there, but be very conscious of being able to re-fit the door cards.

Cheers

yeah, the innder skin a solid, no holes in it apart from a couple of small ones to access the dor hinges etc.

didnt you mention that you had managed to get the inner skin off so you could access the outer skin, if so, i could deaden the innder skin and not have to worry about the clearence between the inner skin and door card.

how much of a job is it getting the headlining off??

also, where are you putting the tweeters in your mark?

also, where are you putting the tweeters in your mark?

probably somewhere completly daft that will be a nightmare to install, but be fairly different cos it wouldnt be your everyday location :clown:

Not the entire thing mate, the metal plate that's bolted on, and holds the window regulator etc... there's pics up on IceCavern (link in my sig)

if so, i could deaden the innder skin and not have to worry about the clearence between the inner skin and door card.
You might be able to do some of it mate, but there's stuff on the rear of the skin too.. take a look at the pics on IceCavern and you'll see that there probably isn't an awful lot you can do back there (when you take in to account the window mech etc...), but I guess any improvement is worth the effort? :)

how much of a job is it getting the headlining off??
Ask me in a month or so :D They usually aren't hard at all .. the a-pillars are a doddle to get off, so I assume the B, C and D pillars will also be ok.. then I suspect there'll just be a couple of clips holding the lining on.

also, where are you putting the tweeters in your mark?
A-pillars mate.

mark,

what tweeters are you going to be using???
also, what material are you going to be recovering the a pillers in, from the looks of it you have the same beautifull beige as i do :(

Paul - HAT tweeters, which should fit very nicely (possibly even flush) to the a-pillars, due to low mounting depth. They'll take a little work because the pillar isn't flat, but no biggie.

I'm using Audioscape 3-way stretch vinyl with a colour match dye to trim anything I need to match :)

Sorry for the crap pics, lol... no time to be artistic with them ;)

Overall diameter is just shy of 52mm according to the verniers, mounting depth of < 10mm, or 12mm if you properly flush-mount.

That car will need bewtwen 80 and 120 sq feet of Mat or 5-8 gallons of liquid
Don't attempt to use Luxury LIner without using a vibration damper first. I will not give you the results you are looking for.
