Can the Second Skin Damplifier Pack (http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=4854) be used on the underneath of the bonnet to cut out engine noise... Im needing to kill road noise and might use some Overkill on the floor, but not sure how I can get rid of engine noise.
Is this stuff more intended for sound deadening (ie rattles) or will it sound proof? Will putting it on the bonnet actually do anything to the sound inside of the vehicle?

Sorry if this gets asked all the time, just one of those things that I dont know whether it will make a difference so need reassurance!

you can use it as sound proof yeah

What car do you have. I ask as some diesel variants have large sound deadening panels that fit to the bonnet. The Fiesta Diesel does. You could therefore get one of these from the breakers and get the benefit.

Got an old skool mini, so it is pretty loud and rattly in there. Ive deadened the boot and around the speakers, just need to get rid of road noise because alot of the sound is getting lost in it

The main thing im concerned about with the Damplifier pack is that in the bonnet it must get pretty hot and surely the adhesive becomes loose and might fall off onto the engine?

You used to be able to buy special bonnet kits for the Mini, can you not still get them?

They might not be as good as the SS stuff though.

Found some kits but they are £25, and a pack of SS is £15 for 4 sq ft, and I would rather save the cash.
Any one know whether this stuff is OK in the engine bay then?

I doubt it will effect much inside the car though tbh, you need to put a layer or two on the bulkhead imo.

You need to use Spectrum Firewall on the bulkhead and then Motormat on the bonnet for the most effective method of killing engine noise.

Ditto what Mike says...Spectrum Firewall and motormat (or more spectrum firewall) here.

I would use some SS to deaden the bonnet and then some Firewall on the firewall. I would then add one of the kits below to give the engine bay that "original" look and not like it was covered in baco foil. SS is great, but I don't like it on show personally.

I cant afford the motormat but still need to kill engine noise, so what do you think will be better, some of this stuff "Bonnet Liner" (http://www.homesteadcaravans.co.uk/cart.cfm/cat/90/section/432&top=ventilation/startstring/false) or a normal mini bonnet insulation kit like the ones from Newton Comercial?

(feel free to remove this due to the link to the other site)

The most popular way to kill the engine noise is as follows:

1. 2 layers Damplifier or Damplifier Pro cabin side of the firewall
2. 2-3 mm Firewall on the engine side of the firewall
3. 1 layer Motor mat on top of of the 2 -3 mm of Firewall
4. 1 layer Luxury Liner on top of Damplifier

THis is a very popular combination of product for engine noise.

Hope that helps

Anthony - any chance you could spend a little time, and start up a new thread listing the optimal methods for deadening various areas of your car please, eg: door skins, door cards, roof, floor (including trunk), firewall (as above), hood, quarter panels/panels with no speakers, and anything else you can think of?

There's a lot of confusion over what's best to go where, and I'm sure that a definitive list (product specific or not) would go a long way to cure this... particularly if it got FAQ'd.

It would also be nice to have a list of where is likely to create the best reduction in airborne and structural noise if you have a set amount of various deadenings... if you see what I mean?

Personally, I've got 4 rolls of luxury liner, a gallon of sludge and a gallon of firewall (to add to the 70sq ft of R-Blox and gallon of sludge already in my trunk area), and although I've taken on board everthing you've said, and what's written on your site, it would be really great to have a thread that tells me the most effective places to apply these.. although I realise that this is a taller order.

Cheers

Mark

Sorry to bump an 'oldish' thread, but I've just placed my order for all the above. It's task is to calm a 1976 Series 3 Land Rover! Reports and photos to follow... :D
