View Full Version : Cheapest way to sound proof doors...
JEAHGREG 09-05-2006, 11:31 AM Hi Guys...
Never sound proofed anything before, and just took off the door cards in my volvo ready to sound proof it, as I have some very thick heavy rubber type mat in the garage, that I thought I could just stick to it..... hmm, well, that was an hour ago and even with all the wishful thinking in the world, it aint gonna happen!!!
So...... sound deadening on a tiny budget..... doesn't have to be amazing! just adequate! i can do amazing when I have money! Any suggestions?? I keep seeing stuff mentioned about cheap roofing material etc???
Also, if anyone has done a volvo 850.... any tips would be great.... the holes in the inner sheet are tiny, so do you not bother doing the outer etc!
Any help greatly apreciated!!!
Greg

PM mulletboy2 :) Mark knows 850's inside out ;)
Cheapest way, I'd say the new Second Skin products on CAD.
joshersdappa 09-05-2006, 12:52 PM how about something called flashing tape (i think) from somewhere like B&Q!!

Because you will need about 4-5 layers of flashing tape to achieve the same result as 1 layer of decent deadening product. Hence you will spend the same if not more on flashing tape as you would on something like BB or SS but with the added hassle of having to apply 4 layers of the stuff. It also tends to fall off in hot weather.
joshersdappa 09-05-2006, 01:09 PM fair enough jon...was just coming up with an idea..but have never used it, just heard about (inc the effort you have to go to as you do need to apply layer after layer) but i will just sit back down now....
Harryredchow 09-05-2006, 01:12 PM I have some rubber mat here in front of me. I used to make a gasket for a water bath in our laboratory. It is heavy and about 3mm thick. I think it would make a great sound deadening mat. Apply Dunlop Thixofix to the panel and the mat. Allow to dry until tacky and then stick it on. The ony problem may be getting the panels clean enough for a permanent adhesion.

Back in your box :p ;)
It's useable but far from ideal. I have used it in the past, and 1 layer of BB was better than 3 layers of flashing :)

yeh im using ivanhoe!! (which was only VERY recently) but i was impressed with it!! it may not be as thick as BB, but it costs ALOT less and is very easy to apply, although 2 layers were needed (still worked out cheaper) :P

SwitchBlade 09-05-2006, 01:46 PM I think the cheapest is Bodyline from Bodyshopwarehouse.co.uk

Ivanhoe indeed, got good reviews on here for its pricing :D
JEAHGREG 09-05-2006, 02:27 PM cheers for the replies, I've got some very heavy rubber matting in the garage (bit like car mats are made from, and slightly ribbed! mmm!), I've started sticking it on with a glue gun and seems to be holding up very nicely!!! plus I've got some camping mats that I'll also use (closed cell foam!).... sound proofing on the cheap!
Have just managed to give my self a rather unpleasant burn with the gun though, got glue in a blister lol!!!
I think the main problem isn't what I use but where I apply it!!!
is there an online guide (with pics!) to help me along?
cheers
Greg
Jonny-5 09-05-2006, 02:30 PM The closed cell foam is sound proofing not sound deadening. Different results. Although this will aid in damping out road noise it will not improve the driver performance in the door, which is what deadening is designed to do :)

aaahh, ok, well I'll stick more of the rubber matting in! it is very heavy and I think should dampen things nicely!! we shall see, if not I guess I'll have to spend some hard earned!
Jonny-5 09-05-2006, 02:42 PM I m not sure how well hot glue will hold in the summer though ;)
Harryredchow 09-05-2006, 02:49 PM As I stated in my previous post, use a good quality contact adhesive. Hot melt glue is poo (only not as sticky). You need it to be stuck on the entire surface, not just a few dabs.

JEAHGREG 09-05-2006, 02:50 PM It all falling off would be a giggle!!! Guess it would be the kick up the backside needed to get some decent stuff! lol!
really don't know how sucessful it's going to be!! to be honest even with dynamat etc it'd probably be useless as I'm clueless!!!

Im sure I could get it to stick, it's just a case of where to stick if for maximum effect
