I've been involved in the audio industry one way or another for many years, as a sound engineer both live and studio, and then, managing a high end Hi-Fi store, so as you can imagine music has always been a large part of my life. My home audio main rig and my headphone rig are considered fairly good; Meridian active dsp speakers and cd, and as a vinyl lover, my Oracle Delphi IV turntable with SME V arm (cartridge changes, but usually either Dynavector 17D3 or Decca London Gold). I use headphones a lot more these days and use a Schiit Lyr tube hybrid amp to drive either Audeze LCD-2 or Sennheiser HD-800 'phones.
This does mean that I have fairly good reference points for how good audio should sound, and is also the main reason I've not really ever tried to create a "proper" in-car system, the car environment is so difficult for good audio with near field speaker location but very off-centred listening position, plus loads of hard reflective surfaces. I did once many years ago dabble with a decent system that was pro installed; Nakamichi cassette head unit, Kef & Infiniti speakers with individual amps and custom crossovers but it didn't get anywhere near making enjoyable music. It's only now with powerfull DSP that the limitations of the car environment can be challenged and so, I have to give it a go.
