There is metal right behind the speaker mount so you need something not too deep (I hav e install DLS PS6's into a coupe). Also the speaker mounts in the door card, and is not screwed to the door metal anywhere around the speaker.
Will soon be trying some Dyn MW160's - so will see how that goes, planning on a FG base the screws on to the door metal instead of the card :)

I've just fitted a HU and front & rear speakers to a 2004 E46 touring.
I fitted 5 1/4 inch Focal 130V slims. I tried the 6 1/2 inch slims and they fitted (to the mm) but there's no after market fixing bracket for these so I went for the 5 1/4 inch instead (which still need an after market bracket). Sound great. Definitely very limited for depth so go for slim designs
Let me know if you need anymore advice on fitting to this car

Does the oem stereo have preouts or is a preout adapter available?
My customer wants to add an amp and speakers but wants to keep the factory source.
Cheers

No its does not, not RCA's but, there is a way of getting line level out but its complicated. I think it uses balanced line or something like that (not my area of expertise)
Remote wire is pin 16. The only problem is that it is live all the time with the ignition on. With the key out it becomes live when you turn the radio on. I have some insights relating to E46's in here: click
