Colleagues friends car. My colleague has been offered it for peanuts, but it wont currently start.

Its a 1997 2.8.

From what I've been told its had new crank/cam sensors.

Fuel pump sounds like it comes on and doesnt click off once it reaches pressure apparently. Keeps buzzing/whining/whatever noise its making.

Anything I can try to fire it up? Bridge a couple of pins in the relay or anything?

Cheers :)

Are you sure it's reaching pressure then? See if any fuel is actually getting through to the pump.

Does the starter engage and the engine turn over?

Does the starter crank the engine?

I'm guessing your using a new, fully charged, battery.

Are you sure it's not flooded?

Fully charged battery, foot to the floor, crank. Maybe for a long time. Can be worth tickling the fuel pump fuse in and out a bit at the same time (use an assistant).

Crank and cam sensors aren't uncommon, but try the above first.

Do the usual checks, fuel and spark. Look to the fuel rail, there ought to be a valve to check fuel pressure there, or loosten the pipe and see if it fires out. If that's ok, get a plug, and do the plug grounded on a part of the engine and crank it over thing.

This is all 2nd hand info, but here we go:

Will crank for ages and ages. has been hooked up to a battery pack, so definately has juice.

Has had crank/cam sensors in the last month.

I'll have a look and see if there is a schraeder valve on the fuel rail that i can check pressure at.

Does anyone know if a '97 Z3 is going to have the awkward circular diagnostics port or an EOBD2 jobby?

Ta dudes. I'll have a poke at it, see if any fuses are blown or relays making funny noises.

At that age it'll probably be a circly one.

I think this ^^^^ too.

Imo take of the fuel return to see if the pump pressurises (if it's pressurised it will splurt everywhere and sting your eyes).

And I would take a plug out and see if it will spark on the head.

All Z3s have the circular under bonnet plug, if there is an obd plug inside (post '99), it is purely for obd engine related stuff - you'll not access any other ECU from it.

Sadly, most of the easy to obtain diag software and leads are for obd and not the ads inteface (round plug). A round to obd converter won't work, as they use a different protocol. :(

I'm going to have a look at it tomorrow, see what I can find out about it.

Gotta tow it out of the company car park its in, then can see what the score is. Expect more questions. :D

Its got fuel, but no spark at any plug.

Going to see if its bringing up any codes, but its a very odd one.

EWS issue maybe, key codes out of sync or something perhaps.

Was going to EWS issue....

unplug the airflow meter and try it... it may throw up a code, but may just get the car started.... also just to see if its fuel related, try a couple of squirts of easy start(break cleaner does the same) down the air intake pipe to see if it runs... if it does, its fuel issue, if it dont its electrical issue.

If you suspect an EWS issue, try a different key if you have one.

Only 1 key. I will update later when on a pc, but i found the remote fob and it was doing odd things when i played with it. I have a feeling there could be a wiring issue, is there are intermittant sounds when you shake the fusebox. Fuel pressure is spot on, just no spark at any cylinder. No way are 6 coil packs dying at once. Its all fun and games! Cheers chaps.

Depending on the age of the key if it has a button cell the battery can run out which screws up the sync. Could try dropping a new battery in - needs to be done quickly though.

No remote button on the key, its a seperate BMW fob.

He has to unlock the car by using the boot lock to activate the central locking.

When I found the remote fob in the footwell, when you press it and it locks the car it makes a quiet-ish beep and keeps flashing the hazards from memory. If you dont unlock the car immediately the alarm will go off after 20 seconds or so.

Red light on the dash is always on until you put the key in and turn it to Pos 2. Then it goes out.

Sounds like fuel pump is constantly priming, and definately intermittant noises under the dash, I'm fairly sure related to wiring around the fusebox.

Touch odd though, we told him it was nothing immediately obvious to us, and he'd be better off paying the local BMW specialist an hours labour to have a poke around, and he REALLY didnt want anyone else looking at the car. So we are keeping as far away from it as possible, as something just isnt right.

it will be the fact he doesnt want anyone to find the drugs stashed up behind the dash lol!!

if i remeber right these have water ingress issues at the bottom of the a pillars which can screw the body control box but im strugling to remeber been quite a few years since i did one
