Yea, because most people only want to use it for 30mins, which is included in the £1. Nobody is going to cycle for 6 hours on one. It would only take an hour or two to get between the furthest two stations! Also, you wouldn't want to do 6 hours on one of those bikes; they weigh more than a person.

Park it up, re-rent again later.
They are designed as point to point "public" transport, as opposed to leisure bikes. Aimed at commuters.

People that ride these bikes are generally idiots that have no safety equipment and never ridden a bike before, especially in central london.

Ah, sorry - I guess you didn't know how they're supposed to be used. Yea, they're point to point, and you just get another one (all for the original £1) later for your return journey.
If one is full, bike to the next one. They're max 5 mins apart. There are iphone and Android apps that give a live feed of the amount of bikes and spaces left in each rack in London. It's really rather impressive.

Word of advice, check tires and adjust seat etc before you sign the bike out
For that distance though, I'd walk.

By all means try one though, it's only £3 for the key and a quid for eac day you use it or £45 for the year.
I do wonder though if they use a similar system to Oyster where they cap the rates?
