About 70 odd hp for the 1600 and 105 hp for the 2 litre so you're not going to burn many people off.
I don't know if insurance costs come into it or fuel for that matter but I honestly wouldn't bother with anything less than the 2.8 injection with the Cologne engine simply as the smaller siblings were a bit feeble.
Pinto engines used to eat cams too although in the old days they were cheap to replace, the head used to have to come off to replace the cam on the Cortina versions as there wasn't enough room between the back of the cam bearing journals and the engine bay bulkhead.
Don't know if any of that puts you off but performance wise an old Capri is really a pile of poo compared to a modern family hatch, let alone anything with the sporting pretensions of a Capri.....I had a 1.6 so have some experience of the humiliation of ownership.

The insurance is fine, a bit more than what im paying on my van now, the fuel economy puts me off mainly, im doing around 55mpg now, and it would hit me quite hard in the wallet if i had to pay double the fuel costs each week

The looks were always the Capris strong point but every spotty herbert always wanted the 3.0 litre and later to a lesser extent the 2.8 litre six cylinder engines as they sounded glorious on full bore with a real bark.
The 2.8s were popular as that was probably the best handling Capri straight from the showroom, however by the time they got it right the roads were filling up with hot hatches that ran rings around it.....even Ford themselves put the boot in with their RS Turbo Escort.

the stock 1.6 is appauling. i got halfway to overtaking an lorry and things got a bit rough.
if i were you i'd get a 2.0 which has had a sierra engine swap (better ignition.
they've all got different axles.
there are ways to make them handle/stop better (a-frame/proper disc positions).
and oh yeah, look out for rust.
i brought the cheapest and the first i looked at.

If i kept both van and capri, what would the insurance be like on this? i pay 1000 a year with the van, how much would they be likely to up it if i stuck a capri on for weekend use? And are there any places online i could get a quote for both vehicles?

20 year old worn out car, RWD, 20 yr old driver, no ABS.
Buy something a bit more sensible mate, dont want you killing yourself in a RWD car with leaf springs.

Im a sensible enough driver not to kane it, i just like the look of them, and the mpg and insurance doesnt really differ between the 1.6 and 2.0.
Think i might wait until november to get myself another years ncb. Im getting a payrise in 2 months, if i went for the capri now, the extra money id be on would be eaten straight away on the extra fuel costs :o

Hardly at all. My MGB has leaf springs, and is the same. I learned to drive in it, and you still see me here today only to own an apparently 'scary' French hatch ;).

I have owned a few, mostly the 2.0 but I had a 1.6 as well. Way slow.
The 2.0 is actually better on fuel than the 1.6
Same with the Cortina.
1.6 will do you low 20s the 2.0 will do you high 20s.
1.6 does 0-60 in aboutr 12 sec. Top end about 110 mph
2.0 does 0-60 in about 10 sec. Top end about 115 mph
IIRC the earlier 4 speed cars are slightly quicier in the 0-40 range.
Thats in realistic daily driving use. I knwo someone will tell you they get 35 MPG from theirs or somethign but thats down hill with the engine switched off. I can get the computer on my Cadillac to say 38 MPG.... But not for long LOL
Capris are the cars which gave RWD its reputation for end-swapping. They are fierce in the wet. Spun a few in my time not going that fast even. The bushes in the rear leafs wear quickly, especially on the multi-leaf models, worth doing them with a poly bush.
They rot. Check sills, A pillars, screen pillars, seatbelt mounts in the floor, rear legs, especially spring hanger areas, strut tops, etc. also check very carefully for signs of accident damage.
very sexxeh cars, I still own one, but they are flawed.
For about £3K you can get a nice 2.8 V6. Thats the sensible way to do this. I'd go for the early 80s 4 speed as its a slicker shift than the later 5 speed models.
