Hi, can someone tell me what the engine warning light on my TDI astra van means?

It usually comes on when I start up but goes off straight away, but recently it has been coming on whilst driving it however it goes off as soon as I start to accelerate in gear (if I just rev the engine it still stays on).

Can anyone tell me what the hell it's trying to tell me as I have a long journey coming up and I don't want to break down 100 miles from home!!!

it means you need to visit a dealer straight away it could be minor or get serious.

dont risk the journey

it should go off straight away but if it comes on while driving it means there is a problem

Could mean all manner of things, from low rail pressure to glowplug failure. Get it checked out at least.

Its the engine management light,i was a vauxhall tech for 9 years,by got ive seen hundgreds of these on ,on a serious note it could mean anything with a trouble code, get it checked out at a vauxhall dealer.

if its a low blow diesel engine the most common thing on them is the mass meter.

Thanks for all the replys, do you know if/how much they'll rip me off for checking it and telling me what it is?

Depends upon their minimum labour charge, but it should be no more than half an hour, less if you're lucky.

find an independant specialist with a code reader

Ends are not bad things, they just mean that something else is about to begin.

And there are many things that don't really end, anyway, they just begin again in a new way.

Ends are not bad and many ends aren't really an ending; some things are never-ending.

ask on somewhere like migweb. Often you can get the codes by shorting a couple of pins and counting the flashes on the dash or something. Then you can compare the code you got with a list off the net.

Migweb would be where I'd start.

I'm gonner sound like a bummer here, but I quite enjoy the hole activty

there wasn't an Astra TDI...if its the DTi then i had the same light on my DTi when i had it. They quoted a £2000 repair bill so didn't charge for fault reading (auctioned it a couple of days later ;) )
