With my limited knowledge it looks better in the bb6 graphs. Any thoughts welcome thx

following on from mr c's thread, im also on the lookout for some decent cans.
now ive always used in ear ones, as i used to think people using the big ones looked like dorks, but after a while of listening with in ear ones they start to hurt (ive got tiny ear apertures) and i just happened to try on a pair of bose quiet comfort 15's noise cancelling thingies while wasting time in john lewis....
i know bose is over priced hype, but jesus i couldnt believe the contrast in sound, and have to admit the sound produced from them far out performed any of my in ear ones. also the comfort of them was out of this world, felt like my head was being enveloped by a huge pair of fluffy boobs.
was almost tempted there and then to spank the 290 quid on a pair of them there and then, but then my sensible side kicked in and said to ask you gurus first

no doubt there are cheaper alternatives, oh and noise cancelling is a MUST!

There comes a time a few times too often where I come a cropper!

Tthe item in question is a nut on my sister's 2003 Mondeo. Through the miles/years and grime etc this nut appears to have almost welded itself on to the flexi pipe's rear flange (the flexi pipe I am changing since it will almost certainly fail an MOT (it's breaking/blowing at the front)). I have managed to get three of the 4 nuts off (they are meant to be 15mm, but one required a 14mm on it (15 was too loose a fit) and one needed a 13mm (the item in question) with a 15mm simply spinning around with finger pressure and a 14mm socket barely giving enough grip.

I have tried an Irwin Bolt grip on it (but in 13mm guise (I havea 3/8 drive bolt grip set) to no avail and now I am stumped. Short of cutting the nut/stud out (but I will need to either restud the cat, drill the stud out (take off more potentially seized nuts to take the cat off....) what other options do you think I have? Or is cutting it off the only viable solution?

It's times like these I wish i let a garage deal with it!

Here is the offening item in question:

I'm going to be doing 20k miles a year - what car for high MPG?

Hi guys

I've got myself a new job and I'm going to be doing 20k miles a year.

My daily is a Mazda MX-5 1.8 at the moment, which gets around 35mpg on the motorway. No good.

My other half has a 1.2 8v Clio which gets about 45mpg on the motorway - better. I can nick this temporarily.

What is out there that is:

a Decent.
b Frugal but not stupidly slow (I'm thinking TDI instead of 1.0 petrols - but I'm happy to cruise at 65mph)
c Ideally good handling as I'm going to miss the Mx-5
d Good for stereo
e Between 3 and 4 grand.

At the moment, I've come up with Audi A2 TDI 1.4

Any other ideas?

P88RS II and Time Alignment Question, odd one

So, did the auto setup with the P88, it sounds decent.

What is interesting however is that my sub is shown as stereo (I only have 1 sub, in bridged mode from a single amp) and that the left channel and right channel are not the same distance in the TA settings. Surely this is incorrect although it doesnt sound that bad. Ill try and move it to mono and make the distance the same - but any ideas why it would do this?

Also - once the EQ has been auto set, you can enable / disable it from the Audio menu, if its enabled and I change from flat to custom 1 to 2 etc, does the Auto EQ sit 'over' these or is it replaced?

Thanks

Another deadening question

I've got a clio which I've done a tiny amount of deadening, only where the speaker sits lol. Didn't make much difference and my old sub wasn't really that powerful to make any of the panels flex.

Upgrading my system quite a bit now through and my panels are defiantly flex and i would like to improve my midbass.

I plan on fully deadening my doors, all of the outer skin and all of the inner skin where possible. Is all this needed? Also i know that for best effects you are supposed to try to seal your doors. Is there any special material that you use for this or do you just place some deadening over the holes?

Also i'm getting some 6.5 comps opposed to 5.25 what ive got. I'm going to have to make a baffle for them to fit. Do i deaden the metal where the baffle will be secured and then screw it over the top or secure the baffle directly to the metal?

I plan on deadening all of my doors to improve my mids SQ and then any parts of my car that is going to flex. Im guessing my boot, the boot floor, the rear quarter panels and i will probably do under the rear seats just because its easy to get to. What is this stuff like and will it be enough http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/silent-coat-mat-bulk-pack.html? Is there much of a difference between 2mm and 4mm?

And also what is this stuff and is it needed if so which one is better?

Sky F1 channel

sorry if this is wrong section but all F1 stuff has always been posted here so i "think" its the right section

question is who is making arrangements to get this channel this year, who is happy to just watch 10 races live & highlights on bbc?

for me personally i had to have the channel, being a virgin media customer who has a HD box and that basicly comes with most of the HD channels, i didnt think this was gonna cost me too much to get the channel, i'd allowed for £10

so rings up virgin spent 30 minutes on the phone to them, all they could offer me was the full sports pack at an extra £22.50 a month to basicly get the standard def version of the channel. we ended the call with me cancelling my tv package down to basicly freeview to prevent me getting any extra charges.

i've now ordered sky HD with £100 cash back from quidco comes with £50 M&S voucher and it's costing me around £10 a month extra so basicly for the first 15 months i'm getting it at no extra cost if you count the cashback

Just noticed I was on post 910 ...
It's only right as a massive Porsche fan that my 911th post is Porsche related...
We, my pops and I, have a small workshop in London where I earn money for my car audio addiction by fixing/restoring Porsche cars. Couple of Body jigs, a few ramps and a good little team!

Here is a few shots of a 997 GT3RS we finished in Jan 2012, a 3.2 supersport trackday/race car and a couple of my favorites.

It's cold, it's Monday and I needed to cheer myself up a bit so started looking through some old pics. They are so pretty (IMHO) I'd like to share.
Here are some sexy Porsche's that we have built

After being busy for almost 10 years with the Panda's, I wass fed up with them.
Also, a Panda is very efficient is NW, but because of the limitation of only using 1 x 18" woofer and with current days of amp power, you are stressing the sub very hard and power compression also comes into play a big time when you are feeding your sub +30kw
Soooo...
Time for a new car/build!!!
Picked the car up beginning 2011. Forgot to take a pic before the build started, but this is the exact same one: Citroen Visa!

started to take the backseat out and make some room for a BIG box. And first testfit for the baffle.

More pics!!
Removing the headliner for some dampning.

Dampning doors. Inner and outer skin.

And ofcoarse also the floor and firewall.

Now time to make a subwooferbox...
I used 6mm thick steel plate and 40mm x 20mm (thick wall) tubing welded together.
Drawing the sides on the steel plate before cutting.

Welding time!!

I had to put the tube on the top of the box on the "flat" side to not loose to much boxheight. Afterwards the squares were filled wit a resin/sand mix.

Resin/sand was also used to make the floor of the box.

We had to rush the car "ready" to collect the needed (at that time) 50 points ( half of 100) to let this car participate at WF.
We got the car playing friday at 4pm and left on saturday on 5am to Oki's event for the needed points and certified score.
Making noise does mean some equipement...
Well, I brought the Visa to Wim, the guy that build the silver/blue Team DD NW Panda.
He has more room to work on the car.
Wim called some friends for help

Sound deadening a streetbasser... where's most important?!

Right chaps!

Soon to have a blowthrough rear ported box sealed off from the boot installed in my E60 5 Series...

Going to be 2 Jugg 12's and 4krms so pretty hefty.

Now, because it's to be firing through the ski hatch and sealed off from the boot, I'm hoping this will eliminate most of the rattles from the boot lid... Where is the best places to sound deaden to make the car sound better? Or is it not worth it at all in a streetbass monster?!

I was thinking maybe deaden the parcel shelf? Is there any point in deadening any off the boot seeing as there should be no pressure back there??

Thoughts appreciated!

Thanks!

2012 MERC ML THE NEW BUILD REPORT

Well it’s that time of year for me to start building something fresh for the new season and as always I’m going to try and build only once for the year. Just want to say thank you to Marcos for building me a table top so I can use my circular saw as a table saw, with some help from a friend this afternoon I ripped down full 8x4 sheets and all where inch perfect so 5 very large pieces cut next step will be to glue screw then fix Arris rails to the panels, so I can do all my dry fit in my front room got some very good sheeting that I can only use in doors so no mess will be made in my slash mock up suit no cutting rasping sanding allowed . Big thanks to (Paul Kieran henry Marcos Jason_D Richard I’m finally going real big) cause they let me ask all the questions I didn’t understand correctly and the new things that I found I understood better. I was given lots of really good ideas which I drew out plus was given a few pics from the chaps to get what they meant across, but I needed to build, no wanted to build something different and I think I have found that. I will be sorting a full build log as soon as we change to better daylight hours, shell size around 40cft. Won’t say just yet what I’m building but those that know seem to think it should do quite well.

Making wall side trims

I've tried everything I can think off. This is the only car my plans havn't worked in! I can't foam, cut, fill and smooth. because there is a window in the way I can't use a straight bit of card ect.

There is a little more wood work above the box now but basicly...

I was going to fleece straight to the trim, glass and smooth. Nothing sticks to the trim! Not even the world famous 3M VHB tape!

How can I do it? This car seems to hate audio and mostly walls!

TV Aerial Question

I use Freeview for my TV and I have a Humax PVR. Since moving I find that whilst we get a shedload more channels and I can see them all fine through the decoder built into the TV some channels say the channel is scrambled or no signal if viewed via the PVR. To be fair the aerial has seen better days, has a couple of elements that are bent, its covered in soot from the fire as its on a live chimney and the cable has a spliced join in it as when we moved in they previous owners had redirected it to the bedroom and kitchen as they obviously had sky in the living room as they left the dish behind.

Is this dropout issue likely to be because the aerial is not good enough and if so any reccomendations as to what to replace it with? Do I need anything special? We seem to have a good line of sight to the main transmitter (The Wrekin) as we are on a hill. Is it worth just getting a man in or can I do it myself and save a few quid, I have a ladder that will reach.

I spend 6 hours a night on my own delivering milk, And I spend most of this time wondering between house to house with head phones on listening to music and pod casts. As you can imagine I listen to a lot of music and pod castings every week.

My quandary is,

I need a set of head phones that are in ear, but secure as a jog/run most places. They need to be robust as I do alot of work in those 6 hours and they need to be better than my shitty free iphone ones. and I have no idea about head phones. I dont want an expensive pair just some good quality ones that fit nicely in my ears and wont hurt or be annoying or break or be shit sounding.

Help? Ideas?

External HDD or Upgrade PC?

Hi guys, I've got the following HTPC set up:

GA-MA78GPM-DS2H
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 5600+ 2.90GHz
2GB Arianet Ram (DDR2 800MHZ)
1TB Hitachi Deskstar HDD
2TB Samsung HDD
Antec Fusion 430 Case with 430watt PSU

All working fine but could be quicker and more importantly I have now run out of storage.

One solution would be to buy an external hard drive as my case only has 2 3.5" bays

The other solution would be to buy a tower case with more 3.5" bays and get a new internal HDD, this would make it easier to upgrade in the future to a better mother board, dedicated graphics etc...

The only problem with having a tower case is that it won't sit as nicely with the rest of my equipment, but I would just hide it away to be honest, not much of a problem.

I don't use my PC for gaming or anything it is 80% a home theatre solution and 20% a web browser.

Cheers guys,

Any comments on this proposed deadening for doors? Need guidance.

I have a Ford Focus,. 2008 model, Morel Tempo 6 components are going in up front, amped off a genesis stereo 100.

Now, I can take the door skin off, and take the original OEM speakers out, but the only access to the outer door skin (behind the speaker and window mechanism) is through the speaker hole once I've removed the original speaker.

This is how I'm thinking I'll do it.

1. Take the door cards off, and then drill the speakers out.

2. Cover the entire door panel (inner skin) where I've highlighted the area in pink, in Silent coat 2mm deadening matt.
Heres the link to the product. http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/silent-coat-volume-pack.html

3. Then cover this in sound isolator 4.
Heres the link to this product. http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/silent-coat-noise-isolator-4.html

THEN

Reach through the speaker hole and apply as much deadening matt as possible, that my reach through the hole will allow.

My questions are.

1. Do I put a layer of the 4mm foam ISOLATOR over the deadening matt on the outer skin too? The matt that I've managed to put through the speaker hole?

Or do I just put sound deadening matt on the outer door skin and not bother with putting the foam ISOLATOR 4 over it?

2. I was going to use some squares of Silent Coat sound ABSORBER 15 behind the speakers because apparently it can be used as a back wave diffuser, and helps improve sound quality.

Do I put this straight on top of the sound deadening matt on the outer skin behind the speaker, OR on top of the foam ISOLATOR 4 matt, which might be covering the deadening matt on the outer skin?

I know its best to completely cover the outer and inner door panels but I'm no mechanic and I fear I'll royally mess something up if I attempt to take the inner door skin silver panel off.. which will give me access to the outer door skin.

Its a shame because I'm so close to being able to get full access to the outer door skin and deadening the whole thing, but at the same time, I don't know how to take it apart and put it back together.. I imagine paying someone to do this will cost an arm and a leg, I've already pushed my budgets as far as possible to get the above equipment!

Thing I really want to know is, if I just reach through the speaker hole and deaden as much as possible, will this improve the sound, or am I wasting time and money.. Should It be completely done properly, covered 100% or not really bother at all?

For me this is only my second install, I want it done right and I want to be pleased at the end of it... If deadening the WHOLE outer door skin will give me alot better results, I'll look at getting quotes or finding someone that will help remove the door skin..But if it will be negligible results, then I'll feel content with just doing my best at reachinf through the speaker hole!

Sorry its abit complex to describe,

Should I go Sound deadener on first then put isolator 4 over it where ive highlighted in pink in the picture.

and Should I put sound deadener through the speaker hole and then put isolator 4 over it, then the wave diffuser on top of that..

OR

Should I put the sound deadener material through the speaker hole, and just that alone, but put the absorber 15 square behind the speaker?

Finally,

Do I need to cover the entire surface of the door panel? I've understood that its best to cover both panels, but as I'll be doing this myself I can't get access to the outer panel, so looks like I'll have to make do with reaching through the speaker hole...

Should I seal any holes in the skin, In one of the pictures I've ringed this is pink, should I just cover these in sound deadener?

And, lastly, the back of the door card, should I cover this in sound deadening, or just spot deaden it?

The actual applying procedure, do I just heat all the materials with a hairdryer or heatgun and then roller it on? The door panels quite curvy!

Thanks for any help on this!

Much appreciated,

Geeking it up with a Parrot Asteroid... but I have questions...

Hi Guys,

I'm a major techie, but completely clueless about car audio. I was wondering if I could call on your superior knowledge for my next geek project.

I'm thinking about getting myself a Parrot Asteroid head unit (http://www.parrot.com/uk/products/hands-free-car-kits/parrot-asteroid) for my car (a Peugeot 307 SW).

The fact that the Asteroid runs android makes every geek bone in my body very excited, as the developer of a few android apps I'm looking forward to developing things like my own custom tracking app uploading the cars GSP location via a 3g dongle attached to the unit, some funky things making use of bluetooth proximity detection (working out if it's my girlfriend or me in the car and adjust music libraries accordingly), mileage recorder and fillup logging for working out what I'm spending on deisol, I'm chock full of ideas and would love to have a crack at them.

However there are a couple of questions I have regarding fitting the unit. It says that it has support for steering wheel stalk input, but my current head unit (Peugeot stock I'm assuming) also controls a few options in the car, date/time, trip computer etc. Will I be able to replicate this with a parrot system or will I lose these features from my car? These aren't deal breakers by any stretch, I've got a watch and phone for the time, and with the asteroids gps logging I'm sure I could roll my own trip computer (if someone else hasn't already written an app for that) ;-)

Having never fitted a car stereo I'd also like to know whether it's something that any ol' geek can pull off? Do I require special tools or anything?

Any advice anyone has would be very much welcome, and anyone who has any questions I'd be happy to answer.

Many thanks,

Although I am already building almost a year on this car, I still wanted to show my progress.

My last car was a VW Polo 6N2 2000 model.
Chrismas 2008 I got a second hand VW Polo 9N3 96KW from Germany.
It had about 10k miles on it and is from June 2008.

With the new car I wanted to build it more professional than my former.
I had played with Morel Supremo tweets in the pillars, CDM54 mids on the doors and Elate SW6 kicks in the door.
This played on a Q90x for mid/high and 4 channel for the kick and sub.
The headunit was a 7998 bigface with 701 processor.
Mid and high was very nice, but kick and sub where below par.

Thing that I wanted to change:

smaller tweeters for easier mounting

lower playing mids

built in satnav

better kick and sub
ive got 5 cube to play with, 2 amps that will run 750rms each at 1ohm or 600 at 2ohm so 1200 or 1500 total at 13.8v

120 amp alternator, second battery in the boot and TB3 all done with 2 gauge and the run from front to back, earths etc

wanna play loud on music, would you recomend, 2 12s running amp each or both amps into a single dvc 15?

whats gonna play louder on music, box would be tuned to around 33-35hz as that seems to suit my music taste best.
Im leaning towards the 12s with 2.5cu each, as they will play slightly better for the higher freq plus have slightly more cone area.

New project: Black Lupo

As some of you may know I am getting rid of my MG ZR and have got my hands on this

A black Lupo s. Currently has tints and 17" wheels. Other than that standard.

Still in the planning process but definitely looking to do a wall.

Initially though there are loads I need to sort out. Brakes are in desperate need of attention. Needs coilovers and slamming on smaller wheels (looking at 15s) and arches rolled.

After that I am going to concentrate on the audio. Looking for ideas other than a flat wall but if nothing comes up will have to be. Looking to get 18" subs (preferrably Mayhems or DC). Going to take a while but want to do a proper job of this one. Just aiming for 150 +db on music.

All comments and ideas welcome

Top ten worst performance engines of all time..

10.) Mitsubishi 6G72

Why it only moves us to tears: Not a terrible engine, but a terrible application and the collapse of a reputation. Mitsubishi's third-generation Eclipse foreswore the nameplate's import-tuner terror attitude in favor of a softer, more mature outlook; the clearest example of this change was the move from turbo-4 power to this comparatively big and lazy V6. Streetfighter gone suburban bland, the Eclipse remains a bit lost.

9.) Porsche 924 4-cylinder

Why it only moves us to tears: Porsche's four-cylinders are rarely engines to complain about. This one is. Essentially a dressed-up Audi engine back when that wasn't anything special in the first place, the two-liter four was criticized as much for its vibrations as its soft power output. The vastly improved 2.5 liter four in the 944 consigned the 924's motor to the rare dark pages of Porsche engineering history.

8.) Subaru/Motori Moderni Formula One engine

Why it only moves us to tears: Formula One is the most ridiculously harsh competition series in motorsports, but every now and then some well-funded Don Quixote finds a way to get in and be openly humiliated. The 3.5 liter flat-12 was significantly down on power, a bitch to package in the car, and suffered repeatedly from klutzy reliability problems. It never got past the prequalifying stage used at the time. (Many more fun details here: here)

7.) Ford 2.3 "HSO"

Why it only moves us to tears: This is what happens when the marketing department does the work of the engineering crew. Ford wanted to produce a sporty version of the Tempo (yes, really); the end product was little more than blacked-out trim, alloy wheels, a higher final-drive ration, and an imperceptible power bump for the wheezy 2.3 four capped by an embarrassing "high-performance" valve cover.

6.) Volkswagen G60

Why it only moves us to tears: Volkswagen's take on supercharging was confusing. The scroll-type G-lader supercharger was an interesting concept, but in reality it combined the worst of both traditional mechanically-driven supercharging and turbocharging: parasitic drag, a peaky power band, soft low-speed response. This motor helped doom the otherwise-capable Corrado and likely made life all that much harder for VW's American marketing people.

5.) BMW M70 V-12

Why it only moves us to tears: Some high-performance engines are complex, some are heavy, and some have roots in soft luxury-car applications. Few if any others combine these traits to the dizzying heights that BMW achieved with its first production V-12 auto engine. The M70 was huge, heavy, and featured one complete ECU system for each cylinder bank among other gratuitous complexities. The BMW 8-series never shed its lardy image.

4.) Ford 4.2 V8

Why it only moves us to tears: Ford's Windsor V8 is one of the really great engines of all time. It's done everything from cruise Woodward to win at Le Mans. However, if you try hard enough (say, when you choke down displacement to 255 cubic inches and force the works to breathe through a miserly head design and a two-barrel carburetor) you can indeed create an effective boat anchor from one. Available in the Mustang in 1980 and 1981 exclusively with, yes, a three-speed automatic.

3.) Cosworth Vega 4-cylinder

Why it only moves us to tears: The Cosworth-tuned two-liter inline-four was an engine ahead of its time — too far ahead of its time. To read the specs it sounds like something designed last month: all aluminum, sixteen valves, electronic fuel injection, and a really nice stainless-steel exhaust header. All of this produced 110 horsepower. Serious numbers and drivability would have to wait until EFI systems evolved with computer tech in the Eighties.
The fact that this engine went into a Vega did it no favors, either.

2.) PRV/DeLorean 2.8 V6

Why it only moves us to tears: John DeLorean's eponymous gullwing GT car deserved better. The Peugeot-Renault-Volvo ZMJ-159 V6 coughed out an anemic 130 horsepower, far less than what was intended for that dazzling Giugiaro shape. No one disputes that the car had other issues, but the pedestrian power level was a massive handicap that did no end of damage to the car's desirability.

1.) Chevrolet 305 H.O. V8

Why it only moves us to tears: Yes, really: a small-block Chevy. Little modified internally from station-wagon service, the 305 is a harsh lesson in that most important of engine characteristics: breathing. Camaros, Firebirds, and Monte Carlos all received the underachiever five-liter in a variety of intake configurations, none of which came close to doing what a five-liter V8 should do. This engine was the visible end point of Malaise compromise.
